LAPD Caught on Tape Beating Suspect Who Surrendered
News footage captured by a helicopter shows that a man who got down on the ground to surrender was immediately beat by an LAPD officer with a flashlight. The video shows other officers joining in. The LAPD is investigating this use of force.
A police man told the local news channel that the man had resisted arrest so officers used physical measures to detain him. The unnamed man had engaged them in a high speed chase which ended when the suspect stopped in Compton and fled his vehicle.
This incident comes at a time that the US Justice Department has started a two year federal monitoring program to ensure the LAPD enacts reforms. The two year period could be extended by this episode which reminds many of the Rodney King beating.
