JAKARTA (ANP/DPA) - De Indonesische vice-president Hamzah Haz heeft
woensdag gewaarschuwd dat de archipel, het grootste moslimland ter
wereld, dreigt af te glijden tot een land van ongelovigen.
,,We zijn moreel en materieel volslagen arm en de volgende stap
is dat we ongelovig worden'', stelde Haz op een
verkiezingsbijeenkomst in Mataram op het eiland Lombok. Hij wees op
de schaamteloze corruptie in het land en de stijgende productie van
pornografie.
Haz, een polygamist met drie vrouwen, is leider van de
moslimpartij PPP en een van de vijf kandidaten voor de
presidentsverkiezingen die maandag worden gehouden. Hij zorgde voor
onrust door beleefdheidsbezoeken te brengen aan verdachte
moslimmilitanten.
Als de corruptie en onderdrukking van delen van het volk nu eens wordt aangepakt dan lijkt me dat Indonesië wat meer kans heeft...

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Indonesian President Megawati
Sukarnoputri on Wednesday urged Myanmar to do more to
introduce democratic reforms in that nation _ a rare
instance of public criticism of the military junta by a
fellow Southeast Asian country.
Megawati did not mention the junta's continued detention
of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in her speech to
foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations meeting in Jakarta.
«We do encourage Myanmar to take every action that will
add substance to the expression of its democratic
aspiration,» she said. «We fervently believe that
Southeast Asia ought to be progressive and not conservative
when it comes to public participation in governance and in
the promotion and protection of human rights.»
Myanmar is a member of ASEAN and the country's foreign
minister, Win Aung, listened to Megawati's speech.
Megawati's comments were strong by the standards of the
grouping, which adheres strictly to a core policy of
noninterference in member countries' internal affairs.
Myanmar's treatment of Suu Kyi is threatening to
overshadow this week's ministerial meeting. Pressure on the
10-member grouping is likely to grow ahead of 2006, when
Myanmar is due take over the organization's chairmanship.
The foreign ministers were scheduled to release a
statement later Wednesday addressing Myanmar's moves toward
democracy.
According to a senior ASEAN diplomat who attended the
closed door session, Win Aung told ministers that democracy
in Myanmar was «90 percent complete.» The diplomat, who
spoke on condition of anonymity, quoted Win Aung as saying
that Suu Kyi would be allowed to join the process. The
diplomat did not elaborate.
Earlier this month, the EU _ which has expressed concern
over Suu Kyi's detention and other human rights issues _
scrapped talks with Asian finance and economics ministers
after they insisted Yangon be included in an October summit
of Asian and European leaders in Vietnam.
Myanmar's current junta came to power in 1988 and refused
to step down after the opposition, led by Suu Kyi, won
elections two years later in the country, which is also
known as Burma.
Suu Kyi was detained more than a year ago and remains
under house arrest. Her National League for Democracy is
boycotting a constitutional convention that the junta says
is a step toward long-promised democratic reform.
Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timor's foreign minister and a
vocal regional critic of Yangon, said the junta used its
veto power to water down ASEAN criticism.
East Timor is attending the ASEAN conference as a guest.
It hopes to join the Southeast Asian grouping by 2010.
«ASEAN is embarrassed generally with the inflexibility of
the Myanmar authorities in dealing with Suu Kyi,»
Ramos-Horta said. «What harm has she done to anyone
ever?»
The junta says it plans to eventually release Suu Kyi, but
has warned that doing so now could cause instability in the
country.

Nou kijk, in principe heeft ie natuurlijk wel een punt mbt de corruptie en ikkan me voorstellen dat ie niet op porno in zijn land zit te wachten. Ik weet alleen niet goed waarom hij ongelovigheid als een soort volgende stap in dat proces ziet. Indonesie heeft denk ik meer problemen met armoede en etnische spanningen.
wat betreft myanmar: misschien hebben ze gewoon wat meer tijd nodig om langzaam te veranderen. Europa moet die landen niet zo pushen om snel democratisch te worden. Wat in het ene land werkt, werkt misschien niet in het andere land.
Hij heeft 3 vrouwen en mag er 4 hebben. Voor een leider is deze man een echte asceet !!
