LISBON, Portugal (AP) _ UEFA on Friday suspended Dutch
forward Ruud Van Nistelrooy for two 2006 World Cup
qualifiers for insulting Swedish referee Anders Frisk after
the 2-1 semifinal loss to Portugal at Euro 2004.
The Manchester United striker has until Monday to appeal.
Van Nistelrooy called Frisk the «home side's referee» in
interviews after the game.
«Everything which was a 50-50 decision went their way,»
Van Nistelrooy told the Netherlands' NOS broadcaster.
Frisk said in his post-match report that Van Nistelrooy
told him the same in person immediately after Wednesday's
game.
«The suspension applies to two matches of the World Cup
qualifying campaign of the Netherlands,» UEFA spokesman
Rob Faulkner said on Friday.
Van Nistelrooy was suspended «for insulting the referee
on the pitch after the final whistle,» Faulkner said.
According to the official Web site of the Dutch soccer
federation, coach Dick Advocaat also called the refereeing
«dubious.»
«It was there for all to see. It is not the first time
during this tournament that we faced such a referee. Every
questionable decision went Portugal's way,» he said.
