South Africa’s AIDS Rates Are Really 33% Lower
The latest impact study of HIV/Aids on South Africa shows the number of infected citizens is actually 33% lower than previously thought.
The results for 2002, released Tuesday, show approximately 5 million HIV+ South Africans. This is down by 33% from the 2000 results (released in 2001) which showed about 7.5 million would be infected by 2004.
The new report also shows AIDS-related deaths decreasing from 480,000 to about 330,000. The study, issued by the Actuarial Association of South Africa, increases South African life expectancy from 43 to 50 years.
