Rise in Anal Cancer Linked to Rise in Anal Sex
Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center say anal cancer has risen 78% in women and 160% in men over the last 30 years. In 90% of the tumors, they discovered human papillomavirus which can be sexually transmitted.
Risk factors for anal cancer are a history of having receptive anal sex, a history of having many sexual partners and men who have a gay or bisexual orientation. But, anal sex appears to be the biggest factor with more men and women engaging in it.
Researchers also discovered that many of those who came down with anal sex were also avid smokers. They speculate that smoking either prevents the body from killing cancerous cells or it lowers the immune system.
