Soccer coach killed, two players injured

A soccer referee allegedly shot dead a coach and injured two players who questioned one of his decisions during a match in Kenton-on-Sea, Grahamstown police said today. Mali Govender, a police spokesperson, said two teams from Kenton-on-Sea - Ekuphumuleni and Marcelle - were playing a match yesterday when the referee gave a yellow card to a player from the Marcelle team.
The Marcelle players and coach objected to the decision and a fight broke out. The referee pulled out a firearm and fired a shot which hit the Marcelle coach in the chest. Two players were hit in their hands by the same bullet. The coach died on the scene.
The referee then fled the stadium. Police were expecting to arrest him soon. The coach's identity will be released once his next-of-kin are informed of his death. Police are investigating a charge of murder and two cases of attempted murder, said Govender. - Sapa
