TEHRAN, July 24-- Some 3,500 faithful Armenians from around the world gathered Saturday in Chaldoran, West Azarbaijan province, for the 50th anniversary of pilgrimage to St. Thaddeus Church, aka Qareh Kelisa. The religious ceremony was first held in 1954 to mark the martyrdom anniversary of St. Thaddeus, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ (PBUH). This year's message of Jathliq Aram I, spiritual leader of 4 million Armenian Orthodox Christians, was read by Neshan Topozian, spiritual leader of Armenian Iranians. In his message to the pilgrims regarding family affairs, children, social relations and the role of church, Aram expressed concern over drug addiction and referred to it as a threat to the very core of families and society. He encouraged pilgrims to undertake this ancient and pious annual pilgrimage held in Iran. The Armenian spiritual leader also called on associations to strengthen their relations with the church, religious leaders and schools, and urged Iranian officials to help renovate St. Stephanous Church in Jolfa and Qareh Kelisa in Chaldoran. Organized by social experts, associations and university scholars from Tehran, Isfahan and Tabriz, a seminar on family issues was also held on the sidelines of the international event. Thousands of faithful Armenians from Iran, the US, Austria, Armenia, Cyprus, Lebanon and Syria are in Chaldoran for the three-day religious event.
