Israeli Occupation Government Detains British Journalist Ewa Jasiewicz For Supporting The Palestinian People

GAZA, August 26, 2004 (IPC+ Agencies)

The Israeli public prosecutor refused to allow Ewa Jasiewicz, a British free lance journalist, to enter Israel and the Palestinian occupied territories. Ms. Jasiewicz is a reporter for the left-wing monthly magazine Red Pepper.

The allegation set forth by the Israeli public prosecutor proved that the Israeli interior security service (AL Shabak) turned to be revenge against the pro-Palestinian activist, who has good ties with the international solidarity movement and indisputably a critic of Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territories.

A couple of weeks ago Jasiewicz was jailed on arriving at Ben Gurion Airport without charges being brought against her. She was interrogated for seven hours at Ben Gurion Airport then was told she would be deported as a political activist whose reports would "not be objective". She appealed against pending the ruling inside the jail, she won the appeal and was allowed to enter the country, and on condition not enter the occupied West Bank or Gaza. Within hours, the Israeli government appealed even against that, and Ms Jasiewicz was once more detained.

The Israeli government appeal was on the alleged backdrop that Mrs. Jasiewicz came to the West Bank and offered support to the refugees inside Jenin camp and in Hebron she reported about the Israeli brutal practices against the Palestinians there, a matter that seemingly teasing the Israeli occupation authorities.

Mrs. Jasiewics arrived in Israel to make a report about the activities of the pro-Palestinian international solidarity movements (ISM) as well as the anti -apartheid wall activities by other international and Israeli movements but the Israeli “Shabak” held her on arrival of Ben Goriun air post and after seven hours interrogation decided to deny her access to Israel.

Mrs. Jasiewicz is working as a journalist, who holds a UK and an international press card. She was commissioned by a bona fide publication to report from Israel. The arrest of foreign journalists like Mrs. Jasiewicz and the limiting of their journalistic work causes damage to Israel's freedoms and reputation, which has a good past record of allowing foreign journalists to travel within the country and the occupied territories and to report what they see, even in very difficult circumstances but that damage is worse than the damage done by inaccurate or even hostile reporting. These are not our words but those of the National Federation of Israeli Journalists in a letter last week to Ariel Sharon.

One week ago the Israeli district court in tel Aviv ruled to allow Mrs. Jasiewicz to enter Israel with restrictive conditions, on a bail worth of 30,000 NIS (£3,600 ) , a pledge not to cover the confrontations with the Israeli occupying troops and not to enter the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Within hours, the Israeli government appealed against even that, and Mrs. Jasiewicz was once more detained. The Supreme Court then ruled that her case must be reheard in the district court which ruled yesterday to deny Mrs. Jasiewics entry to Israel.
