MADRID, Oct.28 - Nearly 100,000 Moroccan undocumented immigrants in Spain may benefit from a regularization plan, recently announced by the Spanish government, said head of the association of Moroccan immigrants and workers in Spain (ATIME), Mustapha Lamrabet.

Lamrabet affirmed the scheme, announced Wednesday by minister of labor and social affairs, Jesus Caldera, is “very positive for it is the fruit of constructive consultations with different social partners and civil society associations,” especially immigrant-oriented ones.

ATIME president deemed “exaggerated” the figure 800,000 irregular immigrants to be regularized. According to him, the number of Moroccans meeting the conditions would not exceed 100,000.

The Plan, to enter in force in 2005, will require beneficiaries to prove they have resided and worked in Spain for six weeks. They must also have entered Spain before June 2004.

“At the contrary of the previous government of right that did not follow up consultations with immigrants associations and unions, the current one proved it could reach a minimum consensus between the partners, Lamrabet said.

He finally called Spanish authorities to be vigilant with any blackmail or extortion attempts by unscrupulous employers against their workers wanting to regularize their situation.
