INTERIOR MINISTRY CONDUCTS SPECIAL OPERATION
ROSTOV-ON-DON, January 26 (RIA Novosti) - A special operation in Nalchik is being conducted with peculiar cautiousness to prevent unnecessary loss of personnel, Aleksei Polyansky, the acting head of the Southern Federal district Interior Ministry's information department, told RIA Novosti.
The location of the terrorist group, which is blocked on Severnaya St. in Nalchik, was discovered during the operation's course. "The group most probably consists of people who belong to Yarmuk Jamaat," Mr. Polyansky said.
Since the beginning of the year, the Interior Ministry conducted a number of large-scale special operations in the North Caucasus, including in Daghestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachayevo-Cherkessia, Mr. Polyansky said.
"The special operation in Nalchik is another link in the chain of the above-mentioned operations," he said. According to his data, 15 people were detained as a result of the operations since the year's beginning and law-enforcement bodies have reliable information concerning the detainees' connections with illegal armed formations.
"In the course of interrogations the detainees are giving evidence of their associates as well as of arms-caches," Mr. Polyansky said.
According to his data, 20 grenade launchers, hand and tank machine-guns, about 300 automatic firearms and Wahhabite literature were confiscated in the course of the operations.
"The measures being taken for cleansing the North Caucasus of extremists will continue. The interior bodies of the Southern Federal district will do everything possible so that people can lead a peaceful and safe life," Mr. Polyansky concluded.
