SIDON: Former Premier Rafik Hariri's assassination has broken the "separation wall" between the Hariri-backed Future Movement and its political opponent in Sidon MP Osama Saad. As soon as Hariri was pronounced dead, Saad offered his condolences and shared his grief with the Hariri family, as he had experienced a similar tragedy when his father Maarouf Saad was killed in a demonstration in 1975.

At the time, the assassination was blamed on the Lebanese authorities.

The MP's brother Mustafa and niece Natasha were also targeted by a car rigged with explosives in 1985. The accident deprived Mustafa of his sight and killed Natasha.

Despite the gesture by Saad, one cannot overlook the political advantages that Hariri's death has granted Saad in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Rumors are circulating in this port city that Saad intends to open a new page with his opponents in Sidon's politics, although the move does not necessarily mean that he will relinquish his position.

Sources familiar with the issue revealed that Saad has encouraged his supporters and party officials to support the Future Movement in the wake of Hariri's assassination.

Sidon's unity showed in the demonstrations led by its MP and a speech he delivered at the Hariri family residence before government officials. Saad was intent on the identification of the perpetrators.

The sources said Saad is planning to visit MP Bahiya Hariri, Rafik's sister, as soon as she returns from Saudi Arabia, to discuss a list of ideas for future political plans.

The sources added that Saad is keen on preserving the city's unity with the parliamentary elections looming around the corner.

However, the sources highlighted that the road to dialogue and openness will not be easy or free of obstacles.

Nevertheless, Sidon abides by the game of nepotism, they added, arguing that this was clearly displayed when Saad replaced his brother in Parliament unopposed when the latter died in 2002.

Thus Hariri's death raises several questions: Will Hariri's children replace him unopposed or will Saad propose to Bahiya Hariri a new equation that will change the balance of power?

These questions can only be solved when the MP returns from Saudi Arabia. - M.Z.
