Palestinian Martyrs Memorial
By Genevieve Cora Fraser
Al-Jazeerah
March 2, 2005

The apartment was cold
But warmed by love
Grandmother’s home
To her aching daughter
And surviving grandchildren
Distraught in agony
Pale and worn with grief
I sat and listened
As her face contorted
In pain spoke
Of her husband’s
Premonition of death
The birthday cake
Unbaked for her son
The space heater
Faced me a gift
Of warmth
As the family
Aunts and uncles
Cousins
In best dress
And suits
Huddled crowded near
In mourning
Glossy posters
Of the martyrs
Hung in the hall
The dining room
Bedrooms and parlor
In a leather strap
From the neck
Of the mother
Widow in black
From head
To toe oblivious
To the cold
Speaking
From a labyrinth
Of memory
Walking through
The moments
Of love lived
Strong arms
Embraced
Calmed her
Still
His life
Flowed out
In ribbons of red
Stained the rug
Soaked into tile
A rouged memorial
To the passing
Spirits’ flight
As Israeli
Supremacy
Ruled the night
Tanks
Helicopter gunships
Sniper sharpshooters
Blasted their unholy
Hell
Into the ties that bind
A family
In life
Frozen
Forever
In the memory
Of terror and death
