US presencein Iran-EU nuclear talks out of question: MP
Tehran, March 6, IRNA -- Head of the Majlis National Security and
Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi here Sunday ruled out
the possibility of US presence in nuclear talks between Iran and
Europe.
"The Islamic Republic has accepted negotiations with Europe not
with the United States. We do not have any direct talks with the US in
practice," Boroujerdi told IRNA in an exclusive interview.
"US presence in Iran-Europe talks will be negative due to the
negative view that the United States holds on Iran`s absolute right of
uranium enrichment.
"Iran has made no decision on direct talks with the United States
and opposes any US presence in the talks," he added.
He expressed hope that the negotiations would result in a formula,
enabling Iran to continue uranium enrichment based on regulations of
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Europeans to
have their supervision and system control.
"As the issue of nuclear activities has a technical aspect, there
could be supervision in a way that we will continue enrichment to an
amount needed for supplying fuel to our reactors and therefor the
guarantee requested by the West will be met.
"We seek uranium enrichment and do not accept it being permanently
stopped. We believe Iran should put an end to its temporary and
voluntary suspension," the MP stated.
Asked about permanent enrichment suspension in exchange for
receiving economic incentives, Boroujerdi stressed, "Permanent
enrichment suspension is unexchangeable and we will never accept it."
In response to a question on the reasons behind the slow pace of
nuclear talks, he said, "In the negotiation scene, Iranians are one
side whose goals are clear but the Westerners are on the other side
who are under immense pressure exerted by the United States.
"The United States is determined to deprive Iran-Europe talks
from having any outcome."
The MP noted, "The three European states of Britain, Germany
and France, as important countries within the European Union (EU),
are faced with US pressures and have serious domestic problems.
"Differences of opinion among various European officials prove the
fact that the Europeans cannot deny Iran`s right of getting access to
peaceful use of nuclear technology fundamentally.
"But the impacts of serious pressures by the United States which
opposes Iran`s legal and international rights can be witnessed in the
talks. This is the reason behind the slow pace of negotiations," he
further pointed out.
"If the two sides issue a statement announcing that the main issue
of uranium enrichment is agreed upon but more discussions should be
held for defining a supervisory strategy, it will demand more time.
"In that case, we can say we have reached an agreement with the
Europeans and will negotiate with them on more details," he stressed.
