UN Security Council Resolutions: A Question Of Credibility

By Ali Al-Hail
Al-Jazeerah, March 23, 2005

The Security Council has been established by the founding fathers of the United Nations during the mid 1940’s to become the executive division of the United nations and an international mechanism to solve out conflicts and disputes via resolutions signed by its members to be applied indiscriminately rather than selectively.

The long term goal of course of such an action is to maintain peace, security and stability across the globe providing that, members equally and by the same token cooperate to have these resolutions implemented impartially and without prejudice or bias.

Had the Security Council born this principle in mind on which it was initially, founded the world would have become by now an oasis of reconciliation, sanctuary and self-assurance.

Having said that however, all this was merely a wishful thinking because the Security Council with its noble code has long been hijacked by certain predominating powers whose interests determine whether this resolution or that should be put in practice.

So many ordinary people in the world raise simple but legitimate queries and open sensible inquests into, for example, why should the Security Council resolution 1559 on Lebanon should be implemented immediately while older resolutions 242, 338, 194, and 181 on the Palestinian issue are standing still though they were agreed upon by the international consensus, nearly four decades ago.
