GUNMEN have assassinated a senior Interior Ministry official in Irag after he told the media that an alleged hostage crisis fuelling sectarian tensions in the country was exaggerated.
Police said 10 gunmen entered the home of Major-General Adnan Thabet in Baghdad and killed him and his nephew.
Hours before he was killed, Maj-Gen Thabet addressed the situation in the town of Madain, near Baghdad, where Sunni insurgents were said to have taken Shiites hostage.
"The number of hostages has been greatly exaggerated," he said.
Shiite officials had put the number of hostages at as many as 150, but when Iraqi forces regained control of of the town yesterday they failed to find any.
