Iraq, Education, 5/9/2005

A study carried out by the UN and issued on Friday revealed that 84% of the higher education establishment in Iraq were "destroyed, damaged and robbed " since the beginning of the American invasion in 2003.

It said that some 50 university teachers were assassinated and "the threats are directed to others working in this sector."

The conductor of the study, Jerome Ready, which takes Amman as a headquarters, said that reform of the higher education sector is a precondition for rebuilding the country in the long run. He counted the main difficulties this sector encounter including "water and electricity supplies, the migration of prominent university teachers to other areas ( 40% of them left since 1990) and the long isolation the already ails educational system is suffering.
