Two killed, 20 wounded in Umm Qasr explosion

(changing dateline) BASRA, May 11 (KUNA) -- Two people were killed and some 20 seriously wounded when an explosive device blew up on Wednesday at a chemical fertilizer factory in Umm Qasr south of Baghdad.

Witnesses told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the explosion took place at the intersection network of natural gas pipes used to supply the factory with fuel, saying that the pipe system was severely damaged in the fire that broke out because of the explosion.

No statements were issued by any of the officials on the site, and fire brigades were still trying to control the fire after the wounded were taken to the city hospital.

Meanwhile, a booby-trapped car was driven into a military base in the border village of Qaem, whereby a fire broke out.

Village sources said that a US Humvee vehicle parked at a checkpoint near the Al-Rummana Bridge was damaged by the fire that broke out, adding that full assessment of damage is not yet possible.

Witnesses had said that two US helicopters had fallen into the Al-Kour valley near the village of Qaem, but this was not confirmed by multi-national forces.

Some five explosions had ripped through Baghdad earlier today, claiming the lives of 37 and wounding 61, just a few hours after a booby-trapped car in Tikrit killed 28 construction workers and wounded 59 others. (end) smj.mhg.
