Israeli plane spotted in Lebanese skies on election day

BEIRUT: On election day, Sunday, the Lebanese army witnessed an unexpected visitor in the air, an Israeli warplane, that flew the length of the Mediterranean coast from the South border to just short of the North city of Tripoli, where the last round of elections were being held.

The aircraft was reported by the Lebanese army to have flown over the coastal towns of Batroun and Chekka as votes were still being counted from the final round of parliamentary elections in the North.

The official army statement said: "On Sunday at 10:14 pm (19:14 GMT), an Israeli warplane entered Lebanese airspace near the [South] city of Tyre and flew as far north as Chekka, passing over Beirut, before heading back south."

Two weeks earlier, during the second round of the four-stage elections, four Israeli aircraft were reported to have flown over the South, a day after the vote was won by a pro-Syrian alliance including Shiite militant group Hizbullah, the main resistance force of Israel's 22-year occupation.

Despite the UNs' repeated calls for a halt to Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace, there are daily accounts of Israeli planes, some reportedly pilotless, flying in Lebanese skies.

Hizbullah never issues a statement on airspace violations because the intrusions fall under the jurisdiction of the Lebanese Army. -With

Israels verklaring voor deze vluchten is altijd om Hezbollah in de gaten te houden. Hezbollah bevind zich echter niet in Noord-Libanon. De reden voor deze vluchten zijn dan ook om te provoceren.
