ISTANBUL - A man carrying a gun hidden inside a loaf of bread was arrested yesterday as he approached a bus that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was boarding, and a prosecutor said the suspect may have intended to shoot the premier.
Erdogan was climbing onto the bus after a speech opening the school year in Kutahya, western Turkey, when security personnel noticed the man moving toward the vehicle and arrested him, the Anatolia news agency said.
“The individual was carrying a plastic bag with two pieces of bread in it and was reaching his hand into one of them to hold a gun hidden inside. The individual was caught like this,” prosecutor Mehmet Serif Eren was quoted as saying.
“The first evaluations give the impression that he was trying to assassinate our dear Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.”
Eren did not say what the suspect’s motives may have been, but private CNN-Turk television showed the suspect being dragged into a police car as he yelled: “Have you heard the news? Yesterday we gave up five martyrs.” Five Turkish soldiers were killed Sunday in clashes with separatist Kurdish rebels.
As he struggled with police officers, the suspect dropped the clear plastic bag, which was later picked up by officers.
The man was reportedly from Mersin, a Mediterranean port city that recently has been the site of clashes between pro-Kurdish demonstrators and Turkish forces.
Eren said anti-terrorist police were investigating whether the suspect had any ties to terrorist organizations.
Erdogan later arrived in Ankara on a police helicopter and was met by chief of police Ercument Yilmaz, Anatolia said.
In 1996, a man angry over Turkey’s military cooperation with Israel pointed a gun at then president Suleyman Demirel, but was tackled by bodyguards before he could fire a shot.
In 1988, then-prime minister Turgut Ozaiwas shot in the hand by a would-be assassin.
