Animals Die and Iams Lies!
If Iams doesn’t take its own research policy seriously, why should consumers?

In March 1999, Iams claimed to have committed to a moratorium in which “no new studies would be initiated that would result in the end of the life of a dog or cat.”

However, as evidenced by our 2002-2003 undercover investigation of an Iams contract testing facility, Iams blatantly disregarded this policy when 27 dogs used in its experiments were killed.

But long before we caught Iams red-handed (blood red, in fact) through our investigation, Iams was funding and approving experiments in which animals were killed—as if its March 1999 policy was nothing but a piece of paper.

PETA has reviewed documents from the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) regarding Iams-funded research conducted by Dr. Roger B. Johnson and has found even more indisputable evidence that Iams allowed animals to die in experiments after instituting its no-kill policy!

In a letter sent from the chair of UMMC’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to Dr. Johnson, the chair notes that Dr. Johnson’s experiment (entitled “Effects of diet on the initiation of gingivitis”) “is assigned protocol number 0801 with an approval date of November 16, 1999.” Since Dr. Johnson had to have IACUC approval before proceeding with his experiment, his project could not have started before November 16, 1999. In fact, according to Dr. Johnson’s “Animal Activity Protocol” for this experiment, the anticipated starting date for the study was December 1, 1999.

Dr. Johnson’s IACUC approval date and the anticipated starting date for his experiment clearly fall well after the date when Iams’ no-kill policy took effect.

It is shocking then that in item number 19 of Dr. Johnson’s “Animal Activity Protocol,” he states, “At the end of the experiments, animals will be euthanized.” In item 22 of the same document, Dr. Johnson again states, “Animals will be euthanized at the end of the test period.”

So where was Iams? Where were the company’s ethics and promises? Probably the same place they were when Iams representatives walked through the lab we investigated in 2002-2003, saw dogs going insane from confinement with no resting boards in their cages, and did nothing to change the situation. And probably right where they were when our investigator e-mailed the company with a warning that the dogs at the lab were going to be surgically debarked. Iams’ ethics are in constant motion—usually a side-winding motion.

View the letter that we sent to Procter & Gamble (Iams’ parent company) regarding this Iams-funded study at UMMC.

On February 8, 2005, Iams responded to our letter, saying, "[PETA] states that dogs used in a gingivitis study at the University of Mississippi over five years ago were euthanized. This is incorrect. No dogs were euthanized following this study. The statement in the November 1999 protocol, which said that the animals would be euthanized, was an error that was corrected in the protocol for a follow-up study. In fact, these same dogs participated in the follow-up study and are still alive today."

While we regard this supposed typo in Johnson’s protocol as suspect, even if it were true, this would mean that these suffering animals have been cooped up in cramped laboratory cages and subjected to invasive experimentation for more than six long years, from 1999 to 2005! Learn more about Iams’ follow-up (2002-2005) gum disease study.

As if this isn’t troubling enough, Iams lied again with regard to an experiment it funded from June 1, 1999, to May 30, 2001, at the University of Kentucky, entitled, “Lipid Metabolism in Feline Hepatic Lipidosis (FHL): Impact of Taurine and Carnitine.”

In publicly available documents obtained from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Geza Bruckner—the primary investigator for this project—states in his “Research Project Proposal” that the cats used in the experiment would be “fed a high caloric diet low in LPUFAs [long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids] and deficient in taurine and marginal in choline and methionine until they gained at least 30% above their lean bodyweights, thus minimizing stores of these nutrients” (emphasis in original).

He goes on to note that such a diet would “rapidly precipitate the development of FHL [feline hepatic lipidosis],” a condition for which “[t]he mortality rate in cats even with aggressive nutrition therapy approximates 40% and approaches 90% in untreated cats.”

Iams had nearly three months—from the time its 1999 policy went into effect to the time that this experiment started—to insist that Dr. Bruckner either change the protocol to comply with Iams’ policy or risk losing Iams’ funding altogether. Instead, Iams allowed this experiment to continue without any change, knowing full well that death was likely to occur for cats with induced FHL!

And that is just what happened. According to the university’s animal disposition records, four cats died during this Iams experiment:
Cat number 4785 was “[f]ound dead” on August 23, 2000.

Cat number 4790 was euthanized on August 10, 2000, “because of [a] grossly large spleen.”

Cat number 4799 died on August 15, 2000, after which a “necropsy revealed diseased kidneys.”

Cat number 4787 was euthanized on June 20, 2000, “because of indications [of] renal disease (high creatinine).”
Iams is a quintessential promise-breaker—claiming an end to terminal research on dogs and cats one moment and repeatedly killing them behind closed laboratory doors the next.

Please e-mail Iams or write to its president at the following address to tell him that you won’t buy while animals die! In fact, tell Iams that you won’t buy until it ends all laboratory testing on all animals:

Iams Company

View the letter that we sent to Procter & Gamble regarding this Iams-funded study at the University of Kentucky.

On December 2, 2004, Iams responded to our letter, saying, “[PETA’s] allegation that we failed to enforce our terminal research moratorium for this study is irrelevant, as this was not a terminal study. The causes of death for all the animals [PETA] lists were not study-related. In addition, unlike what happens in the naturally-occurring FHL, there is no mortality in the laboratory model.”

RICHMOND -- It may seem surprising that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- a group that often comes to the defense of rats -- euthanized more than 1,300 cats and dogs last year.

But PETA President Ingrid Newkirk says it was the only humane thing to do.

Last year, the Norfolk-based animal-rights group took in 2,103 companion animals. It was able to find homes for 386, and put down 1,325. (Transfers and reclamations by owners accounted for most of the rest of the animals PETA took in.)

"It is a totally rotten business, but sometimes the only kind option for some animals is to put them to sleep forever,'' Newkirk said. "I don't think a dog living in a cage walking in circles for the rest of its life in a dog prison is a swell thing.''

While several dozen shelters in Virginia have adopted a no-kill philosophy, PETA has not.

Tables are turned on PETA

ANDREW PORTER, a spokesman for the Center for Consumer Freedom in Washington, tells The Free Lance-Star the group is running the Web site PETAkillsanimals .com "To expose what we believe is hypocrisy on PETA's part.

"The organization constantly attacks everyone from restaurants to consumers for harming animals. Come to find out, PETA's doing the same thing."

Two North Carolina workers for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have been charged with animal cruelty for the manner in which they euthanized and disposed of the bodies of dogs and cats.

PETA says the animals were sick or unadoptable. The CCF believes at least some of the pets were adoptable, Porter says.

"You can quibble about the means," he says, but he argues that PETA is doing the same kind of thing for which it condemns others.

"The group was caught doing something they know is not right, or at least looks hypocritical," Porter says.

The Center for Consumer Freedom is run by Washington Richard B. "Rick" Berman, a former labor lawyer and restaurant industry executive who is a lobbyist for the food, alcoholic beverage and tobacco industries.

In the late '80s, Berman fought the Americans with Disabilities Act, saying it threatened to cripple the hospitality industry.

The CCF has repeatedly attacked PETA in the past in the name of "consumer freedom."

"PETA kills animals--and its leaders dare lecture the rest of us," the Berman-connected PETAkills animals.com Web site says.

PETA isn't shy about responding on its own Web site, consumer deception.com, saying, "Berman has been called 'a tobacco company whore,' but he's branched out since then."

PETA spokesperson Colleen O'Brien says the CCF and its Web sites are funded by big food conglomerates such as Phillip Morris.

The CCF's Porter doesn't dispute that, but insists the funding question is "a straw man."

Of the CCF, PETA's O'Brien said: "These are the same people who have campaigned against Mothers Against Drunk Driving. They're representing the very companies that PETA's asking to make changes."

According to The Associated Press, two North Carolina counties have stopped turning over shelter animals to PETA, expressing surprise that the group euthanized cats and dogs.

PETA says it tried to have some of the animals adopted, but the condition of some pets and a shortage of homes made it impossible.

The counties learned of the euthansia after two PETA workers were arrested and charged with dumping dead animals in a shopping center's garbage bins.

One of them, Northampton County, says it will stop working with PETA until the criminal cases against it are resolved.

The wire service reports that since 2001, PETA has taken animals from shelters in Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties and the town of Windsor.

State documents in Virginia showed that PETA euthanized about 6,100 domestic animals from 2001 to 2003, according to the AP.

Daphna Nachminovitch, director of PETA's domestic-animal and wildlife department, said in a press conference:

"Did we euthanize some animals who could have been adopted? Maybe. The point is that good homes are few and far between. Our aim here was to stop them from dying an agonizing death."

PETA said it offered to take stray animals and euthanize them by fast-acting injection because it considers that more humane than gassing or shooting them.

According to the AP, the two workers arrested last week, Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk and Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach must appear in court July 19 to face charges of animal cruelty, disposal of dead animals and trespassing.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) --Dumping the bodies of dead dogs and cats in the garbage is wrong, but the president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Friday that animal cruelty charges against two employees won't stick.

"It's hideous," Ingrid Newkirk, president of the animal rights group, said of the dumping. "I think this is so shocking it's bound to hurt our work."

Police in Ahoskie on Thursday filed 31 counts of animal cruelty, eight counts of illegally disposing of dead animals, and trespassing charges against Andrew Cook, 24, of Va. Beach and Adria Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk.

The two were in a North Carolina court Friday accused of throwing dead dogs into a garbage dumpster at a shopping center.

Authorities in Ahoskie also told 13News they will reopen an investigation into a similar occurrence from two years ago.

From PETA headquarters in Norfolk Friday, Newkirk said that the dogs and cats did not suffer in their deaths, so there was no cruelty.

She did say that PETA's policy is to euthanize animals here and then cremate them, not throw away the bodies. So, an investigation has been launched into the actions of the two employees.

Ahoskie police arrested the pair Wednesday night as they disposed of some bags into a dumpster. Police said the bags contained the bodies of 18 dogs; 13 other animals were found dead in a white panel van that’s registered to PETA.

Authorities said the animals were alive with the pair picked them up from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties. The two were picking up animals to be brought back to PETA headquarters for euthanization, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said Thursday.

Police have said that Cook and Hinkle said the dogs would be found good homes.

The arrests came after a month-long investigation where as many as 80 dead animals have been found in dumpsters on four consecutive Wednesday nights. Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh said, "It just gets to you after awhile."

A veterinarian told 13News that one of the animals he examined had been healthy and he couldn’t understand why it was killed.

Hinkle has been suspended from her job until the investigation is over. Cook remains on the job, according to PETA.

Today's hearing set a July 19 court date for Hinkle and Cook. They remain free on $35,000 bond. Each felony charge carries a maximum of 15 months in jail and the maximum term for each misdemeanor is 60 days.

After court, a tearful Hinkle said, "I'm devastated. And all I wanted to do is help the animals in the community. I'm devastated."

Her attorney, Larry Overton, added, "I think she's devastated about the way the situation apparently was handled and obviously about being charged with these crimes and the potential consequences to her."

Adria Hinkle said she's devastated about being charged with animal cruelty.

Newkirk said the workers were picking up animals to be brought to PETA headquarters in Norfolk for euthanization.

Veterinarians and animal control officers said the PETA workers had promised to find homes for the animals rather than euthanize them, according to police.

"PETA has never made a secret of the fact that most of the animals picked up in North Carolina are euthanized," Newkirk said.

Neither police nor PETA offered any theory on why the animals might have been dumped. Newkirk said no one from PETA noticed that over several weeks Hinkle was returning from her weekly trips to North Carolina without animals to be euthanized.

PETA spokeswoman Colleen O'Brien said the organization euthanizes animals by lethal injection, which it considers more humane than shooting or gassing them in groups, as some counties do.

Hinkle has been with PETA for two years in its community animal project division.

Newkirk said PETA also runs a program in the three North Carolina counties to sterilize animals, and has encouraged them to set up programs for animal adoptions.

PETA has euthanized animals for years. In Virginia last year, the activist group euthanized 2,278 animals, sterilized 7,641 and found homes for 361.

:fpetaf:
