Islamic scholars enjoy more freedom in Qatar: Minister
Source ::: The Peninsula
Doha: Islamic scholars enjoy more freedom in Qatar than any of the neighbouring countries, said the Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, H E Faisal bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud.
In some other GCC countries, Islamic scholars authorised to give sermons (khutba) during Friday prayers have to read from a written text which is cleared by the authorities concerned. “A scholar cannot say a word more or less than what is there in the written text,” a local Arabic daily quoted the minister as saying.
Whereas in Qatar, a scholar gives ‘khutba’ extempore and is allowed to speak on any subject, including atrocities on innocent civilians in Afghanistan or 9/11, for instance.
“Islamic scholars in Qatar are moderate,” said the minister. There are more than 300 scholars and 1,200 mosques in the country,” said the minister.
No scholar has ever been punished by the ministry in Qatar for having given a speech or for any other issue, said the minister.
