Saddam trial to be televised
Agencies
Baghdad: The trial of Saddam Hussein is to begin on schedule next week and will be shown on live television, Iraq's chief judge said on Thursday.
Judge Raed Al Juhi, declining to estimate how long Saddam's trial would take, said whether Saddam faces the death penalty if convicted “will be decided at the last minute”.
Saddam and seven former aides are to face trial on October 19 for the 1982 massacre in the Shiite village of Dujail, north of Baghdad, which left 142 people dead.
Saddam's defence team have repeatedly challenged the legitimacy of the trial, and have accused the judges of bias. They also said they have had insufficient time to prepare.
