Comment : The Neocon’s Neocon – the liar’s liar

The indictment of Lewis “scooter” Libby, chief of staff to America's Vice-President, Dick Cheney,exposes how a web of lies will eventually entangle those that span it in the first instance.
Hubris has consumed the USA in recent years. The Bush administration considered themselves so powerful and so prevailing that they were beyond trivial matters such as presenting cases based on fact and evidence. They knew they were right about going to war in Iraq and they weren’t going to let the truth get in the way of things. However, the disastrous consequences of their policy has resulted in a death toll 2,000 of their own and many more Muslims.
In 2002 an apocryphal tale of yellow took Joe Wilson, a former US ambassador, to Africa to investigate Saddam’s procurement uranium from Niger. Despite his
conclusion that the story was baseless, George Bush used it in a speech setting out the case for war two months before the invasion. After which, Mr Wilson went to the media with the truth behind the story. Then came the backlash from the Bush’s Rottweillers. So the dirty tricks done dirt-cheap brigade leaked the fact that Joe Wilson’s wife was an undercover CIA agent. This is the organisation that had warned untold previous governments of the dangers of exaggerating the Soviet
threat. They had continually put the stoppers on uncontrolled spin in relation to foreign policy throughout this period. It is not that they were against lying, but they knew the consequences of a credibility crisis resulting from telling falsehoods to the people and getting court out. For decades Capital Hill and the CIA had enjoyed a love hate relationship. The CIA had long urged the Georges W Bush’s hawks to be cautious about their search for pretexts. A word of advice that is tantamount to treason in the eyes of the Neocons. The implication behind leaking of Joe Wilson’s wife Valeria Plame’s details was that she was an unpatriotic traitor by virtue of her day job. What has landed Libby and the administration in trouble, not only the original charge but the cover up and the process of obstructing the investigation.
So after all this death and destruction in Iraq the killing continues on all sides unabated. The arguments for war, presented by the UK and US governments to the UN and other international bodies as well as their own inner cabinets and wider political arenas have long been exposed as being weak or totally false. Lies about the war are nothing new. There were the WMDs the links to Bin Laden and the uranium link. However what is new is the slaying of those “mighty” men of Washington; by falling on their own swords of lies.
