Rents of housing units to be based on income

Doha: A city to house low-income expatriates is being planned on the outskirts of the city by the authorities concerned to help combat spiralling rents in the capital, The Peninsula has learnt.

Rents for families and single workers allotted housing units in the proposed city are to be fixed strictly in accordance with their monthly income.

A huge plot of land has already been earmarked for the purpose near the Industrial Area and the authorities are set to invite private real estate investment companies to build housing units in the proposed city.

Contracts between real estate operators and the authorities concerned are expected to be inked soon. A number of real estate firms are said to have already expressed eagerness to take part in the massive construction project.

The city would house thousands of expatriate families, the number of whose members could run up to 200,000. In a separate block within the planned city, housing units to accommodate close to a 100,000 single workers are to be built.

The project is to be completed in phases and work on it is to start very soon.

The authorities responsible for allotting the residential units in the proposed city are more likely to go by the salary certificates issued by the employers of applicants. The proposed city would have shopping complexes, parks and gardens, playgrounds, theatres, restaurants and cafeterias, aside from mosques.

The idea is to ensure that it is a city complete in all respects and its residents with fixed income are not subjected to financial hardships due to rising rents.

Low-income families and single workers are, therefore, to be given preference in allotment. The idea of an expatriate city was proposed by the services committee of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI).

It was discussed at the various forums within the QCCI as also with its members who are in the construction business and it was said to have been later taken up with the authorities concerned.
