Boskalis to construct a mega LNG harbor in Qatar

17 November 2005

Royal Boskalis Westminster nv hereby announces that it has won a major contract to construct a mega LNG harbor in Ras Laffan, Qatar. The contract is to be implemented within 36 months. Boskalis is to build the new harbor in cooperation with the dredging company, Jan de Nul. The total contract value is approximately USD 2 billion, in which Boskalis has a 50% share.

In connection with the construction of the harbor, 20 million m3 of limestone is to be dredged. Three heavy-duty cutters are to be used in this hard soil. These are dredging equipment with regard to which Boskalis and De Nul are world leaders. The dredged material will be used as landfill for a new terminal. The dredging work will also involve the reclamation of 25 million m3 of sand from the sea, to be supplied by hoppers. The contract also includes the construction of breakwaters that will protect the new harbor. The total length of these breakwaters is 21 km for which approximately 18 million tons of stone and 2.5 million m3 of concrete are to be used.

The construction of this harbor will more than quadruple the capacity of the current harbor of Ras Laffan (which was also constructed in 1992 by Boskalis and De Nul).

This project in Qatar is one of a series of large scale land reclamation projects on the global market for maritime infrastructure. This market is driven by long term factors, such as world population growth, growth of the world economy and the international trading volume as well as developments on the energy markets. The Ras Laffan harbor is being expanded for the purposes of exporting LNG and related products.
