EU wil spoedberaad IAEA over Iran

Iran Seeks Negotiation not Threats

Bombarded with criticisms for resuming its nuclear fuel research, Iran suggested relying on talks and diplomacy to settle the matter.

The only way to solve this problem is to seek negotiation and diplomacy, said Hamid Reza Asefi, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Minister Sunday, the day before the European Union (EU) countries, Russia, China and the United States will gather in London to have a joint meeting today (Monday).

It will not be a matter of question for Iran to exert its power on nuclear energy, said Asefi during his briefing, adding the nuclear fuel researches have already been underway.

Iran has not crossed any red lines yet, asserted Asefi. There has been a long tradition of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a sign that Iran is conducting its activities behind closed doors.

The European Union threats will have no real result, said the Iranian official, warning that threatening and pressurizing Iran is likely to bring talks to a dead end. The London meeting of the United Nations (UN) permanent members of the Security Council will appoint a date for meeting with the atomic watch-dog organization.

There is no link between the nuclear researches of Iran and the talks with the EU countries, Asefi insisted on, asserting that from now on, the negotiations will only focus on the uranium enrichment program.

There are no legal grounds to refer Iran to the UN, said Asefi, assuring the news media of Iran's readiness for possible [diplomatic] attacks.

The oil prices might inevitably increase if the Tehran administration becomes subject to sanctions, said the Iranian Minister of Economics Davud Danisjafari.

A possible decision to place sanctions on Iran will have a negative effect on Iran's economic and political structure, and that will reflect badly on the oil prices as well, said Danisjafari.

Iran broke the seals on nuclear plants early last week, receiving a note from the five permanent member of the Security Council, and provoking three EU countries, Germany, France and Britain, to call the UN to impose possible sanctions against Tehran. The international community will not have a military operation launched against Iran, said Javier Solana, the EU High Representative of Common Foreign and Security Policy.
