THE NAME GAME

Many people say the sentence (called a mnemonic) "My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets" as a way to remember the order of the planets.

Starting from the sun the planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

If 2003 UB313 is dubbed a planet, what new sentence will we use to remember it?

Manage Alerts | What Is This? (CNN) -- German astrophysicists have concluded a space body located in the outer reaches of the solar system is 435 miles (700 kilometers) larger than Pluto, the smallest planet.

Their research puts more pressure on the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to classify the object as the 10th planet in our solar system.

"UB313 is decidedly larger than Pluto," said University of Bonn Professor Frank Bertoldi, whose team's findings will be published in Thursday's journal Nature.

The object, tentatively named 2003 UB313, is an icy body that lies beyond the planet Neptune.

2003 UB313 was first photographed in October 2003 by astronomers at the California Institute of Technology's Palomar Observatory, north of San Diego. Astronomers announced last summer that it was large enough to be a planet and was likely much larger than Pluto. (Full story)

To determine 2003 UB313's size, the Bonn team lead by Bertoldi and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, used a Spanish telescope equipped with a sensitive heat sensor to measure its thermal emission.

Solar system objects are visible through the light they reflect from the sun. The bigger the planet, the bigger the reflection.

The report says "UB313's surface is such that it reflects about 60 percent of the incident solar light, which is very similar to the reflectivity of Pluto."

"Measuring the heat radiation of UB313 at a wavelength of 1.2 mm, where reflected sunlight is negligible and the object brightness only depends on the surface temperature and the object size, the temperature can be well estimated from the distance to the sun, and thus the observed 1.2 mm brightness allows a good size measurement."

Scientists determined 2003 UB313's diameter is about 1,864 miles (3,000 kilometers), which is 435 miles (700 kilometers) larger than Pluto.

"It is now increasingly hard to justify calling Pluto a planet if UB313 is not also given this status," Bertoldi said.

The claims of a 10th planet have re-ignited a debate over just how many objects should be called planets -- there is no official definition.

A number of astronomers dispute whether Pluto, discovered in 1930, should really be classified as a planet, because it is so dissimilar from the other eight planets in our solar system. They believe Pluto should be classified only as a Kuiper Belt object, part of an array of icy debris left from the formation of our solar system some 4.5 billion years ago.

The IAU, the official arbiter of such disputes, has classified Pluto as a planet and have declined to demote it.

"The discovery of a solar system object larger than Pluto is very exciting," said the Planck Institute's Dr. Wilhelm Altenhoff. "It tells us that Pluto, which should properly also be counted to the Kuiper Belt, is not such an unusual object."

Thousands of Kuiper objects have been discovered, and more are being found all the time. The New Horizons spacecraft, launched on January 19, is on a 10-year journey to explore Pluto, its moons and the Kuiper Belt. (Full story)

2003 UB313's elongated orbit is 97 times as far from the Earth as the Earth is from the sun, or nearly 9 billion miles away.

Scientists measure the distances between planets in astronomical units (AU). One AU is the distance from the sun to the Earth -- 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). 2003 UB313 is 97 AUs from the sun.

Should 2003 UB313 be classified as a planet, its name will certainly change. The scientists who discovered it will submit a name, with the Astronomical Union making the final decision.

"I keep on talking about my object as that thing we found or 2003 UB313, which is a horrible name," said Mike Brown, a Cal Tech planetary scientist who discovered the object with colleagues Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory and David Rabinowitz of Yale University.

"It can't get an official name until it has an official status and right now it doesn't have an official status, so it can't get a name," he said.

How many Plants - 9 ? or 11?

Ancient Greeks wrongly included head of the solar family and moon, our earth’s satellite. They counted planets as follows : 1) Sun, 2) Moon, 3) Mars, 4 ) Mercury, 5) Jupiter, 6) Venus and 7) Saturn. Indians till date include two more : Rahu and Ketu, mere shadows of earth and moon. To the five genuine planets modern astronomy added the Earth after being (identified with planet class in the medieval age) and latest discoveries of Neptune, Uranus and Pluto (as late as 19th century). This brought back the count to 9.

This received a jolt a decade or two ago. Indian astronomer J.J Rawal in 1978 found that the farthest planets Uranus and Pluto were making significant deviations from established orbits and explained them in terms of gravitational influence of two as - yet unseen planets, whose sizes and orbits he estimated. It was only in 1988 his proposal got due publicity when NASA confirmed possibility of Rawal’s outermost planet (or the 11th), by analysing their own data gathered through their various space missions. NASA’s computations of mass and orbit tallied with Rawal’s with refinements and additional details. Nevertheless, NASA could not ‘guess’ his 10th planet. Early this year (1999) NASA brought the “11th planet” to the limelight again among astronomical community and general public. However, both the planets of Rawal’s still remain unconfirmed optically [Fig.5].

Has Qur’an anything to say about the number of solar planets? Yes, indeed!

When Joseph said unto his father : O my father! Surely I saw in a dream eleven planets and the Sun and the Moon....... ( Yusuf : 4 )

One may note the following points of immense significance.

* Qur’an does not confuse the planets (kawakib) with stars (nujm).

* Qur’an excludes Sun and Moon clearly from planets. They belong to a higher and lower order respectively. Such clear demarcation was achieved only by modern astronomy which is but a few centuries old.

* The number of planets are given as 11. We mu’mins have absolutely no doubt that it is a matter of time that modern astronomy will reach this count. Science is now in the process of gathering evidence for what it has already made indications.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

DO PROPHECIES FORETELL IRAQ’S FUTURE?

The continuing carnage in Iraq is reflected in many readers’ letter to me. The “Land Between the Rivers” is where civilization began, where Abraham began his actual and spiritual journey, where the story of Man and his gods began. The questions I am asked are not only about the antiquities that are destroyed, not only about the past, but also about the future: Is there anything in the biblical prophecies that foretells where it is all leading?

FATE Magazine published a short article of mine on the subject in its October 2005 issue, here are excerpts:

Z.S.

Breaking Apart to Repeat History?

The conflict involves a host of issues – democracy, religious freedom, women’s rights stand out. A core issue that divides the three main religious-political-ethnic groups is the extent of autonomy that each will have – the majority Shiites in the south, the distinct Kurds in the north (both in oil-producing regions) and the minority Sunnis in the central region (which includes Baghdad but no oil). The concern is that the greater the autonomy, the greater the chances that Iraq will break up into three parts and will no longer be one national state.

Whether such an outcome is desirable or need be prevented at all costs can be argued pro and con. The arguments should not ignore the fact that “Iraq” is an artificial entity created after World War I by Britain and France when they divided the remnants of the Ottoman (Turkish) empire. How far in history should one go in untangling the ethnic-religious issues? It is a fact that Saddam Hussein saw himself as a reincarnation of the famed Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar and envisioned Iraq as a great New Babylon; and it is a fact, even if little noticed, that the Shiites of southern Iraq intend to call their autonomous region or independent state Sumer!

The Biblical Prophecies

Old Testament Prophets – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel – predicted both the sacking of Jerusalem and its Temple by Nebuchadnezzar as well as the subsequent downfall and destruction of Babylon; both prophecies came true, in 586 B.C. and 539 B.C.

In the New Testament, Babylon and its fate are the main subject of three chapters in the Book of Revelation (“The Apocalypse of St. john”). Those prophecies of wrath against Babylon have posed a problem for both biblical scholars and theologians, since when the Book of Revelation was written, “Babylon” had already long been forsaken and in ruins for centuries. Most scholars therefore believe that the book was composed after the start of the persecution of Christians in Rome and that “Babylon” was a code word for Rome.

But if one believes that Revelation is indeed a book of prophecies – of events to come – and that it says what it means and means what it says, then “Babylon of the future” is a “code word” for today’s Iraq! And if so, what Revelation prophecied becomes both intriguing and relevant.

The Merchants of Evil

The future fall of “Babylon,” according to Revelation, will follow and will be hastened by a period of “harlotry,” during which “merchants of the Earth… have committed fornication with her… and waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies” (chapter 18:2). Applying this to current events, one can easily find here an allusion to Iraq’s main “delicacy” – oil – and the parallel to the “Food for Oil” program of the United Nations through which “merchants of the Earth,” committing ethical and business “adultery,” enriched themselves while providing the Iraqi dictator with funds to stay in power and commit more atrocities.

But when the judgements were pronounced upon Babylon, “the Mother of Harlots” with whom “the kings of the Earth have committed fornication,” those very beneficiaries of the trade abandoned her, stood aside when the destruction began:

The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her,
shall stand far off for fear of her torment,
weeping and wailing, and saying:
Alas, alas that great city that was clothed in fine linen
and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold…
For in one hour so great riches is come to naught;
And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships,
and as many as trade by sea,
stood far off, and cried when they saw the smoke
and her burning, saying:

Alas, alas that great city… for in one hour is she made desdolate.

Revelation 18:15-18

The Breakup Into Three Parts

Once the destruction of “Babylon” was so swiftly carried out, the seventh angel “poured out his vial into the air, and there came a great voice out of the Temple of Heaven, from the throne, saying: IT IS DONE.”

And the great city was divided into three parts…
And great Babylon came in remembrance before God
to give unto her the cup of wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

Revelation 16:17, 19

As events in Iraq unfold, we will see whether they will follow the prophetic script to its cataclysmic conclusion.
