Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) is likely to depute a senior official to visit today the labour camp of a construction company in Ras Laffan that witnessed violent protests on Thursday following the death of two of their colleagues.
Sources in the rights panel hinted in remarks to this newspaper yesterday that its representative will take stock of the situation, but refused to comment when asked if the committee wanted to do anything specific regarding Thursday’s incident. “Any decision that is to be taken, would be taken only after meeting with the workers and company officials,” said an NHRC source.
The company, meanwhile, said that a meeting with the workers at their lodgings will now be held today. Investigations by law enforcement agencies into the incident are going on and many workers were still in custody for questioning.
The labour camps of this leading construction company houses some 7,000 workers from different nationalities, a majority of whom are Asians.
