FM Warns West Against Repeating Bitter Experience of Troop Deployment in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Iranian Foreign Minister Wednesday expressed the hope that the West would not repeat the bitter experience of dispatching and deploying foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Iranian foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met with UN Secretary General's Representative in Afghanistan's Affairs Tom Koenigs and discussed issues of mutual interest, a statement released by the Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Bureau said.

During the meeting, the Iranian Minister noted cultural commonalities of the Iranian and Afghan nations and the positive effects that the stability and progress of the eastern neighbor could leave on Iran's security, adding that Tehran has motives galore for cooperating with the United Nations in Afghanistan's recovery.

Mottaki stressed the need for a stronger role of the UN in Afghanistan's affairs and noting the unsuccessful experience of the deployment of foreign troops in that country, he expressed the hope that the West would not repeat the same bitter experience again.

Noting the existing documents and proofs substantiating involvement of British troops deployed in the Iraqi city of Basra in the recent terrorist operations in southern Iran, he described deployment of British soldiers in the southern parts of Afghanistan unjustifiable.

Also pointing to the US failures in Afghanistan, the Iranian Foreign Minister viewed regional cooperation and UN efforts as the best means of restoring normal situation in Afghanistan.

To conclude his words, Mottaki voiced support for UN measures in Afghanistan and declared Iran's preparedness to participate in the United Nations' industrial projects and reconstruction plans in that country.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General's representative in Afghanistan's Affairs, Tom Koenigs appreciated Iran's role and efforts for the enhancement of stability in Afghanistan and called Iran as the most successful country in campaign against drug trafficking.

He stressed that the long-term engineering of Afghanistan is conditioned on the development of regional cooperation and termed reinvigoration of the Afghan army, police and government accompanied by the regional states' strong support and assistance as the only means of establishing security and stability in that country.

The UN official finally praised Iran's cooperation with the United Nations in materializing that organization's ideals in Afghanistan.
