Kuwaitis have begun voting in the first poll in which women are allowed to cast ballots and stand as candidates.
Women make up 28 of the 252 candidates running for office, as well as 57% of the electorate.

Women's participation in the poll has met with some opposition
The election has been called early after the Emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah, dissolved parliament in May.
It followed a bitter dispute between the government and opposition MPs over electoral reform. The election campaign has been marred by corruption claims.
Female candidates hope to secure some seats in parliament, with women making up more than half of the 340,000 eligible voters.
"The participation of women in the elections makes this a historic day for Kuwait," US-educated candidate Fatima al-Abdali told Reuters news agency.
"The success of any woman will be a victory for all Kuwaiti, Gulf and Arab women."
Islamists too are confident they will get a large proportion of female support, even though they opposed giving women the right to vote for so long on religious grounds , the BBC's Gulf correspondent Julia Wheeler says.
But while some women, particularly in tribal areas, may follow the guidance of their male family members, many Kuwaiti women say they will make up their own minds about the issues that face them, our correspondent reports.
Corruption has been a major concern during the electoral campaign, with frequent allegations of vote-buying by pro-government candidates.
First results are expected within hours of the polls closing in the tiny oil-rich state.
