Lawyers lodge complaint against Israel for crimes against humanity
Wednesday, July 19, 2006
BEIRUT: Israeli warplanes on Tuesday hit residential areas, bridges, churches and roads, leaving behind nothing but wreckage, prompting Lebanon's lawyers to file a complaint against Israel for crimes against humanity to the UN.
Following a meeting of the Beirut Bar Association on Tuesday, the association's president, Butros Doumit, said he was discussing with government officials the "possibility to file a complaint with the UN against Israeli political and military leaders, who are committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide on Lebanese territory."
The Israeli forces hit two trucks during a pre-dawn bombing raid on the coastal town of Jbeil, about 30 kilometers north of Beirut, Lebanese police said. There were no reports of casualties.
A truck carrying medical supplies donated by the United Arab Emirates was hit and its driver wounded on the Beirut-Damascus highway, the Health Ministry said.
Meanwhile, truck drivers in Akkar were asked not to cover their containers in order to prevent being targeted by the Israeli forces, which might think the trucks contain weaponry.
On Tuesday afternoon, four bridges linking Lebanese towns to Syria were targeted by Israeli missiles.
A bridge in Rashaya al-Wadi was also destroyed. In addition, the raids knocked down a telephone transmission antenna in the town of Aita al-Fakhar in Rashaya.
Several roads leading to Baalbek have also been severed by the attacks, while reports said Ibn Sina hospital in Baalbek was hit by a missile.
Two houses, a gas station and a carpentry business were destroyed in a missile attack on the town of Abbassieh on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
A church in Rashaya was also targeted and completely destroyed, wounding several people, security reports said.

The reports added that the Israeli forces had used phosphorous bombs, which are banned internationally.
Three raids on Baalbek, meanwhile, wounded five people and completely destroyed two houses.
Several trucks were targeted as they were crossing the Zahle highway. However, security reports did not mention what the trucks contained.
Israeli raids also targeted houses in Qana and destroyed two pharmaceutical factories in the area of Bourj Shemali.
A road leading to Hasbayya was also cut off by an attack on the area.
Israeli forces targeted Tuesday the towns of Abbassieh in Tyre, Younin and Nahleh near Baalbek, Kfar Kila and Khiam, Naqoura, Burj Rahhal, Shebaa, and other surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Lebanon is making all possible all efforts to provide support to all Lebanese towns and areas, in cooperation with the Lebanese Red Cross.
Hisham Hassan, an official
at the ICRC, said that two trucks containing food and medical supplies arrived on Tuesday to Lebanon.
He also said that foreign and Arab experts have joined the ICRC team in Lebanon, adding that soon they would cover all areas of Lebanon.
"Our activities include providing hospitals with necessary equipment, transporting the wounded to hospitals, providing food, mattresses and other necessary items," he said.
Meanwhile, a security source told The Daily Star Tuesday that the Internal Security Forces (ISF) are working on the ground to maintain security and help the people. The source added that the ISF was also working to stop any act of looting or more sabotage. - Additional reporting by Leila Hatoum
