With its Lebanon campaign entering its 25th day, Israel has brought parts of the country to a virtual ruin.

On Saturday, an Israeli offense consisting of more than 250 air attacks dropped 4,000 bombs within seven hours.

The border village of Aytarun was hit by 2,000 bombs and almost completely destroyed.

The total death toll from the attacks is approaching 1,000. One third of those deaths are from children under 12.

Lebanese Health Minister Muhammed Jawad Khalifeh announced their fuel reserves would only support their hospitals, where nearly 3,000 wounded are under treatment, for another week.

“If the situation continues, then it is likely that the hospitals will close within a week,” Khalifeh said.

The lack of medical equipment also makes it hard for hospitals trying to operate under heavy bombardment. Hundreds of wounded are in critical condition.

In Israel, following Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s threat that he would strike Tel Aviv if Israel hit Beirut, people began to build bomb shelters in the Israeli capital.

The death toll from the Israeli attacks, now in its fourth week, increases daily.

The Lebanese government’s Rescue Commission announced the death toll in the Israeli attacks rose to 968 and the number of injuries was 3,293.

Thirty percent of the dead are children under 12, but this number does not include those who are still trapped under wreckage.

The attacks against Lebanon has displaced more than 913,000 people. Commission figures reveal that 220,000 of these have fled Lebanon. More than 100,000 foreigners and dual-citizens were also evacuated from Lebanon.

Israel almost totally destroyed the transportation infrastructure, vitally important for the transportation of the humanitarian aid equipment.

Seventy-three bridges, 72 connection roads and 6,800 settlement units have been destroyed so far, according to official figures.

The highway on the Mediterranean coast that connects southern Lebanon, Beirut and northern Lebanon was destroyed. The bridges connecting Beirut and Damascus were also bombed by Israeli planes.

Meanwhile, an oil spill which is causing a big ecological disaster in Lebanon is still menacing Turkey.

The spill of thousands of tons of heavy fuel oil from the Jiyye power plant in southern Beirut that was bombed by Israeli jets on July 14 reached Syria and is spreading throughout the Mediterranean.

The Guardian and the Financial Times emphasized the danger that the oil may reach Turkish coasts if the oil slick is not stopped.

“Up to 35,000 tons of crude oil are believed to have escaped, making it one of the worst pollution incidents recorded in the eastern Mediterranean,” the Guardian stated.

The newspaper also mentioned the tourist resorts along the Lebanese coast have been covered with a thick layer of sludge, and fish spawning grounds have been destroyed. The slick is estimated to be more than 50 miles (80km) long and to have polluted six miles of Syrian coastline. It could devastate beaches as far away as Turkey and Cyprus if no measures are taken.

Speaking to the Financial Times, UN Environment Program Executive Director Achim Steiner gave the same warning but added that the spill was only composed of 15,000 tons of oil.
