Police set up video conference between Ramon and accuser
By Jonathan Lis, Haaretz Correspondent

The police investigating Justice Minister Haim Ramon's alleged sexual harassment of a government employee brought the two together Monday for a confrontation via video conferencing. Ramon had requested a face-to-face meeting with his accuser. Instead, he was at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, while the woman was at the Israeli embassy in Venezuela, where she is vacationing.

Ramon's associates Tuesday slammed the police for not demanding the complainant's return to Israel for the meeting. "The decision to hold an experiment and for the first time ever to stage a confrontation by video conferencing for such a sensitive investigation, involving a serving justice minister, is very problematic," Ramon's associates said. "The fact that the investigators did not demand that the young woman return to Israel to confront him face to face proves that they are attempting to protect her."

The police declined to issue a response to the claims, stating that "the investigation is being pursued in a professional and nonprejudicial manner, with the constant supervision of the attorney general."

A few days ago, the team investigating the case traveled to South America and confronted Ramon's accuser with findings from the minister's interrogation. In it, Ramon refutes the woman's claim that he forcibly kissed her on the mouth during a party at the government complex in Tel Aviv about a month ago.

The detectives also showed her materials from the Jerusalem weekly Kol Ha'ir claiming that someone close to her had approached the paper while the case was still under a gag order and offered to sell them details of the incident for NIS 50,000. The police are trying to ascertain whether the complainant was involved in the attempt to profit from the scandal.
