Mortars hit Somalia's presidential palace

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »
View GalleryMOGADISHU (Reuters) - At least two mortars slammed into Somalia's presidential palace on Friday night as explosions and gunfire rocked Mogadishu in the latest outbreak of violence in chaotic Somalia, witnesses and officials said.
"I can confirm two mortars have hit Villa Somalia," a senior government source told Reuters, of the building where President Abdullahi Yusuf stays. "We do not have word yet if there were casualties or not."

More than a dozen explosions boomed across Mogadishu and gunfire rattled out to break a lull in the violence of several days in the coastal capital of the Horn of Africa nation.

"I have heard more than a dozen explosions ... now there is gunfire," said Reuters reporter Sahal Abdulle.

Ethiopian troops, who helped the Somali interim government drive Islamists out of Mogadishu over the New Year, have in past days been the target of attacks from unknown groups.

Suspicion has fallen on remnants of the defeated Islamists, who vowed to launch guerrilla strikes against the Ethiopians whom they regard as illegitimate occupiers of Somalia

Two former Islamists told Reuters earlier on Friday they had infiltrated Mogadishu again and planned to attack Villa Somalia and other targets. Yusuf came to Mogadishu just days ago to take up residence in the already bullet- and mortar-scarred building.

NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) - A freelance journalist said on Sunday he had seen U.S. troops on the ground in south Somalia working with Ethiopian forces hunting fugitive Islamists.

"They were Americans, I have no doubt," the journalist said, referring to helicopters he saw overhead and personnel he bumped into with Ethiopian soldiers at a military base.

Rumors have swirled for days that U.S. personnel were inside Somalia since a January 8 air strike aimed at al Qaeda suspects believed to be among the Islamists

The strike was Washington's first overt military engagement in Somalia since 1994.

But there has been no official confirmation of a U.S. ground presence, which would be sure to inflame political passions in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region where Muslims complain of heightened discrimination in the name of the "war on terror."

The Somali journalist said that while on a filming trip to the Somalia-Kenya border area in recent days, he saw about 30 white men in military dress, some showing U.S. Marine insignia, with Ethiopian counterparts at the village of Kuldio.

The journalist, who works for various local and foreign media but asked not to be named for security reasons, said his vehicle was also tracked from the air for hours by two helicopters each carrying three white crew members.

"We were terrified, because they obviously suspected we were Islamists," he told Reuters in Nairobi by telephone.

"I was sure they were Americans in the helicopters, because we know they are in the area helping the Ethiopians. Then when we reached Kuldio, we saw them land, and the men got out.

"On the ground were at least 30 other Americans at a base with the Ethiopians. They had brown T-shirts and military trousers, some with U.S. Marines' badges on them."

Kuldio lies just a few kilometers from Ras Kamboni, where some Islamists fled after being ousted from Mogadishu on December 28 after a two-week offensive led by Somali government forces with their Ethiopian military allies.

Neither U.S. Embassy officials in Kenya, who also have responsibility for Somalia, nor spokesmen for the regional U.S. counter-terrorism base in Djibouti, could be immediately reached to comment on the journalist's report.

"TECHNICALS" ABLAZE

The Somali reporter said Ethiopian soldiers in the area had told him he could film destroyed Islamist battle-wagons, but not Ethiopian or American military personnel, or else his equipment would be destroyed.

His footage, sent to Reuters TV, shows images of destroyed battle-wagons, or "technicals" as they are known in Somalia.

The journalist said he had counted 85 in a day. "Some were still smoking because the Ethiopians are burning them," he said.

Washington quickly denied last week a Somali Islamist Web site report that its retreating fighters had captured 10 U.S. soldiers, one of whom died of malaria.

Qaadisiya.com, which has been the Islamists' official mouthpiece in recent months, also said "mujahideen" -- who retreated to the remote south after being ousted from Mogadishu -- planned to parade its U.S. detainees in front of media.

But the U.S. envoy for Kenya and Somalia, Michael Ranneberger, dismissed it as "utterly bogus".

Analysts have doubted whether Washington, which had a disastrous peacekeeping mission to the chaotic Horn of Africa nation in the early 1990s, would want to be so directly engaged again as to send soldiers on the ground.

The Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC) ran most of south Somalia for six months until government forces, backed by Ethiopian tanks, jets and troops, drove them out in the two-week offensive over Christmas and the New Year.

Lijkt me logisch.

Canadians hold power in Somalia

Aiding former homeland: 18 Somali MPs are citizens of Canada

Stewart Bell, National Post

MOGADISHU - Somalia has been ruled by the Arabs, the French, the British and the Italians, but now power is in the hands of Canadians.

The interim government that took over this devastated East African country following a war that erupted in late December is made up of a remarkable number of former Ottawa and Toronto residents.

"Tim Hortons coffee, I like it," said Abdullahi Ahmed Afrah, the Minister of Trade, a Somali-Canadian economist who returned to Mogadishu to help turn around his disastrous homeland

The Minister is one of 18 Somali Members of Parliament who are also Canadian citizens. Four members of the Cabinet are Canadians: the ministers of education, information, wildlife and trade.

The deputy ministers of agriculture and energy are also Canadians. President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed is not a Canadian citizen, but his wife and children are, and so is the powerful President of Puntl and state, General Ade Muse Hirsi.

In interviews, a pair of Canadian ministers installed in the fledgling government said that while they are grateful to Canada for giving them refuge, they could not resist the pull of the homeland.

"We could not forget," Mr. Afrah said. "We owed something to this country."

The fighting that erupted between Mogadishu's warlords in 1991 drove hundreds of thousands of Somalis into exile. They fled to the United Kingdom, the Unites States, Sweden, Holland and such neighbouring countries as Kenya. Canada now has one of the world's largest Somali communities.

A former professor, Mr. Afrah came to Canada in 1995 and worked as a small business consultant, but he said he felt compelled to make the long journey home.

When a peace process started in Nairobi in 2002, he travelled back and forth and was chosen to be part of the transitional parliament inaugurated two years later.

Canada gave Somali refugees the opportunity to get away from the violence, and to study, the Trade Minister said.

"That's why you find so many Somali-Canadians in Parliament, because of the degrees and expertise, the knowledge they got in Canada."

Most of the Minister's 10 children remain in Ottawa. One daughter is a social worker, another two are studying at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. At his residence in Mogadishu, the Minister opened his wallet to show his Ontario health card and driver's licence.

"Many of us came back," said Information Minister Ali Ahmed Jama, who left Ottawa to join the new transitional government. "We have been selected by our clans to join the Parliament."

A former diplomat, Mr. Jama was abroad when the Somali government collapsed in 1991. He made his way to Canada, where he worked as an interpreter. But he made trips back to Africa and after a decade in Canada decided it was time to give Somalia another chance.

"I found that the country needed some outside input," the Minister said. He moved back, but his children remain in Canada--one in Calgary and the other at the University of Ottawa.

The interim government headed by President Yusuf took office in 2004 but lacked true authority until Somali forces, backed by Ethiopia, advanced last month and retook Somalia from the Islamic militants who had seized on the power void in Mogadishu to Talibanize the country.

Now Somalia has a government for the first time in more than a decade, and it is made up largely of dual nationals. Hussein Aideed, a former U.S. Marine from California and the son of assassinated warlord Mohamed Farah Aideed, is the Deputy Prime Minister.

"There are some Somali-Dutch, there are Somali-British MPs and ministers also. There are some from Norway, Sweden," Mr. Afrah said. "All the intellectual people, they immigrated during the 14 years of civil war."

This reverse migration has benefited not only the interim government but also its main foe, the Islamic Courts Union. A former Toronto businessman is a senior leader of the hardline Islamist group, and Somali-Canadians are believed to have been recruited into the Islamist militia called the Shabab.

This week, Deputy Prime Minister Aideed said Somali- Canadian Islamist fighters were among those killed in fighting with Somali and Ethiopian troops in December.

But the foreign jihadists who came to Somalia to fight what they thought was a holy war are almost certainly outnumbered by those who want to build a modern nation out of the ruins.

And they are bringing with them their experiences with Western democracy and rule of law, values that will help guide Somalia in the years ahead, Mr. Jama said.

For those used to the Canadian lifestyle, it is not an easy adjustment. "They are willing to return, even the youngest that have gotten their degrees in Canada. Many of them, they are proud of coming back to Somalia," Mr. Afrah said.

"The problem for them is they have become accustomed to Canada. They went there when they were five or six. Now they are 21, 22. They fear for their lives."

US envoy to meet top Somali Islamist in Kenya

NAIROBI (AFP) - A senior US official is to meet a top member of Somalia's ousted Islamist movement to urge the faction not to pursue a campaign of violence, the US embassy in Kenya has said.

US ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger plans to see Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed this week in Nairobi, possibly as early as Tuesday, after his weekend surrender to Kenyan authorities, the embassy said.

"The ambassador will urge Sheikh Sharif to counsel his supporters not to carry out violence and to support the development of an inclusive government," embassy spokesman Jennifer Barnes told AFP Tuesday.

"Sheikh Sharif now has an opportunity as an individual to demonstrate his willingness to work towards a positive and long-term solution in Somalia by urging his supporters to eschew violence and extremism," she said.

The venue for the meeting was not yet determined but Ahmed, who turned himself over to Kenyan officials on Sunday at a border crossing point, remains under Kenyan protection at an upscale Nairobi hotel, Barnes said.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government, which had remained silent for two days about Ahmed's presence in the country, belatedly confirmed he was in police custody.

"The government of Kenya confirms that Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of the Islamic Courts Union is in Kenya under police custody," spokesman Alfred Mutua said in a statement. "The police are talking to him."

Ahmed, head of the executive wing of the Supreme Islamic Council of Somalia, is the most senior member of the movement to have turned himself in after its recent ouster by Ethiopian and Somali government forces.

Diplomats say they hope Ahmed, widely seen as a moderate in the vanquished hardline regime that seized Mogadishu in June and held it for six months, could be a useful element in pulling fractious Somali factions together.

The United States, which backed Ethiopia's late December intervention in Somalia and then launched an air strike at suspected Al-Qaeda operatives there, had already said it believed Ahmed could be a worthy interlocutor.

Ranneberger, whose brief includes Somalia, met with Ahmed, initially the Islamists' top leader, in Nairobi last year after US-backed warlords fled Mogadishu in a bid to press moderation on the then-powerful movement.

But soon after the capital fell, Ahmed was demoted to the executive arm, paving the way for Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, a firebrand cleric designated a terrorist by the United States, to take over as the movement's supreme leader.

The Islamists then began to institute strict Sharia law in areas they controlled, sparking fears of a Taliban-style takeover of Somalia and threatening the largely powerless Somali transitional government.

Mogadishu 27, Jan.07 ( Sh.M.Network) Ethiopian and government troops have last night made a force entry into the Elman human rights office in south of the capital Mogadishu. They forcefully took away eight of the security personnel at the Human Rights Center.

Sudan Ali Ahmed, the chairperson of Elman Human Rights centre in Mogadishu, has told Shabelle by phone in Mogadishu Saturday that Ethiopian forces along with Somalis have broken into main gate of the Rights office at 10:00 pm local time. “Only the security guards were at the center at the time and the troops handcuffed eight of the guards, driving them away”, he said.

He pointed out that he did not know the motives behind the raid and the arrest that followed.

Asked if the arrested men were suspects of crimes, Ahmed said, “Elman Human Rights Center never employs criminals or people with criminal records.”

He added that the Rights management and members of the staff would initiate today contacting the government security departments of Mogadishu over the release of the arrested Elam security guards.

Oil, Not Terrorists, the Reason for US Attack on Somalia

By Wanjohi Kabukuru

01/22/07 "ICHBlog" -- -- Just why did the US attack Somalia two weeks ago? Of course, the answer given for the US military intervention and the generally accepted notion is the hunt for terrorists. But is it? Are terrorists the only bone of contention the US has with Somalia? When the US military devised “Operation Restore Hope” in 1993 which was short-lived after they were whipsawed by rag-tag militia in and around Mogadishu, were they fighting the ‘war on terror’?

They couldn’t have been because this war was to start much later, If anything it is a post-Sept 11 phenomenon. So then why did the US bomb ICU extremists in the name of Al Qaeda terrorists and not throughout last year when they occupied Mogadishu?
Just why is Somalia so important to the US, and by extension the big boys of Europe and some Gulf states? A UN Somalia Monitoring Group report released in November 2005 reveals that a dozen countries, namely Yemen, Djibouti, Libya, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Ethiopia, Iran, Syria, Eritrea, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Uganda were all poking their noses into the Somalia pie.

What the UN Somalia Monitoring Group didn’t reveal, however, is that these were not the only countries which were interested in the country. The little known yet well-heeled contact group, consisting of Norway, the US, UK, France and Tanzania (just an appendage) are also deeply enmeshed in Somalia.

While the terrorism theory holds some water, the reality of the factors contributing to the mess in Somalia is pegged on natural resources. Oil and gas are Somalia’s Achilles heel. It is an open secret that four US oil giants are sitting pretty on money-spinning concessions expecting to reap huge windfalls from massive resources of both oil and gas in Somalia.

The story of Somalia and oil goes back to the colonial period. British and Italian geologists first identified oil deposits during that period of imperialism. The first oil wells historically referred to as the Daga Shabell series were dug in the 1960s. Tiny gas discoveries adjacent to Socotra were also noted.

The race for these precious natural resources took a new turn in 1988, when the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank, with the support of the governments of Britain, France and Canada and backed by several Western oil companies financed a regional hydrocarbon study of the countries bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Eden.

The countries were Somalia, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia was later dropped, but not before it had been established that within the study area, massive deposits of oil and gas existed. The results of the findings were presented to a three-day American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Eastern Hemisphere group conference, in London in September, 1991. Is there oil in Somalia? Listen to the answer:

“It’s there. There’s no doubt there’s oil there,” said geologist Thomas E. O’Connor, the World Bank’s principal petroleum engineer, who steered the in-depth, three-year study of oil prospects in Somalia’s Gulf of Eden in the northern coastal region.

The study was intended to encourage private investment in the petroleum potential of eight African nations. The conclusions of their findings are quite telling as the geologists put Somalia and Sudan at the top of the list of prospective commercial oil producers.

While presenting their results during the conference, two geologists involved in the study (an American and an Egyptian) reported that the investigation of nine exploratory wells dug in Somalia pointed out that the region was “situated within the oil window, and thus (is) highly prospective for gas and oil.”

Geologist, Z. R. Beydoun, who was involved in the survey, noted that “the geological parameters conducive to the generation, expulsion and trapping of significant amounts of oil and gas” were within the offshore sites. Soon after a race for lucrative deals kicked off in earnest.

Four US oil companies, namely Conoco, Chevron, Amoco and Philips have concessions in nearly two thirds of Somalia. This quartet of oil conglomerates was granted these contracts in the final days of Somalia’s deposed dictator, Siad Barre. The US first military engagement in Somalia was fully supported by Conoco.

Somalia: Pirates resurface in Somalia Plus More Choas

Fri. January 26, 2007 10:12 am.

Mohamed Abdi Farah

The local authorities of Harardhere town in central Somalia Friday have expressed great concern over reviving pirates in the town.

Abdisalan Khalif, chairman of Harardhere town in Mudug region, central Somalia confirmed the local media that Somali pirates massed at the town which was notorious for piracy in the past.

The pirates were reportedly preparing to launch acts of hijacking the ships on the the Somalia coasts.

Khalif rebuffed that residents in Haradhere were supportive of the pirates. “The pirates inflict harm to the civilian population, so there is no way residents can back the pirates”, he said.

Khalif said the government should send troops to crush down the pirates.

The Islamic Courts Union, which was in control of the area for the past six months, eradicated the practices of piracy before they were forcefully driven out by the Ethiopian and Somali government troops.

Harardhere, a coastal town was the hotspot of Somali pirates but Islamists later flushed out all pirates in the area.

The White House is using puny Somalia as a straw man to be set up and knocked down. "War president" Bush desperately needs a victory in his bungled "war on terror." After three defeats, a fake victory over a fake Islamic threat in obscure Somalia is just the kind of jolly news Bush & Co. hopes will cheer gloomy Americans and divert attention from the disaster in Iraq.

Please GA SLAPEN domme doos.

- ze hadden alleen de macht in drie provincies;
- de clanmilities waren niet uitgeschakeld;
- somaliërs waren en zijn nog steeds bewapend;
- ontwapening was en is de eerste prioriteit;
- het overgangsparlement en de overgangsregering beseften dat;
- ontwapening is moeilijk tot stand te brengen in die anarchie; de overgangsregering wilden daarom al meer dan 2 jaar geleden een vredesmacht van de Afrikaanse Unie om het in goede banen te leiden;
