Jordan, Saudis Clash Over Anbar
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Jordan and Saudi Arabia have clashed in the struggle for control over Iraq's Sunni community.
Western diplomatic sources said the two Arab allies of the United States have vied for control over Iraq's Sunni community. The sources said the struggle has focused on Iraq's Anbar province near the borders of Jordan and Syria.
"The Saudis are pumping in lots of money in Anbar while the Jordanians are offering trade and visas to those willing to cooperate," a diplomat said.
So far, the sources said, Jordan has been permitted to quietly operate in Anbar. They said the Jordanian military has helped train pro-U.S. Sunni forces while bringing in recruits for instruction in Amman.
