Patna, India – Dhul Qaada 10, 1428/ November 20, 2007 – Muslims in the north Indian state of Bihar expressed outrage at the mass rape and murder of a Muslim woman by a gang, very close to the Chief Minister of the state Nitish Kumar, who is the leader of a coalition that also includes the Hindu fundamentalist party BJP. Reshma Khatoon was abducted, raped and then killed brutally by the gang. Ironically, this happened to the woman even after she wrote a letter to the chief minister expressing fear that she would be eliminated at any moment. Reshma also sent copies of the letter to the leader of the opposition Rabri Devi, who is also the former chief minister of the state, as well as to the Bihar chief secretary, director general of police and several reporters of television channels.
In spite of these pleas for safety, the police recovered the decomposed body of Reshma Khatoon in a ban in a posh area near the official residence of the chief minister on October 31. The police also recovered a copy of the letter she had sent to the chief minister, according to the Radiance views weekly. In the letter, Reshma named those who abducted and raped her many times. They are Anant Singh, an aide of the chief minister, Mukesh Singh, a builder, and Anand's security guard Bipin Singh. Anant, whos is the member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly representing the chief minister's party, is a notorious criminal.
Prakash Singh, a reporter of India's leading television channel NDTV, was one among the media persons who got a copy of Reshma's letter. Prakash Singh and his cameraman approached Anant Singh for his version of the story regarding the letter of Reshma on November 1, next day after recovery of her body, were brutally thrashed and made hostage for about one hour. They were attacked with butts of rifles and kicked out by Anant's henchmen. Police arrested him only after his men went berserk and attacked many other media persons.
According to the Muslim woman's letter, she approached the builder Mukesh Singh earlier seeking for a job. Mukesh took her away, raped her and then passed on to Anand Singh, who also raped her. After that his body guard also outraged her modesty. The letter said that she was repeatedly threatened by the gang that she would be eliminated if she made any disclosure. The disclosure of the letter by the media and the subsequent brutal murder of Reshma has sent shock waves among the Muslims in the non-Muslim majority state. They are demanding justice and bringing the culprits to justice.
