Iran Optimizes Missile System

TEHRAN, Feb 17--The Iranian Air Force defense specialists have optimized and successfully test-fired the S-200 surface-to-air missile system.

The optimized missile system was successfully test-fired on Sunday morning in the presence of senior army personnel and government officials.

Elaborating on the significant capabilities and advanced features of the S-200 missile, the commander of the Iranian Air Force Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani described the project's main objectives as examining the efficiency level of passive defense systems against probable threats as well as improving the level of skill and knowledge of the staff.

Touching on the air force specialists' efforts to domesticate the world's advanced sciences in line with the imperative to gain the ability to effectively defend the country's air space, General Miqani said that Iran's military capability serves the cause of peace for Iran and the entire region.

He added that the praiseworthy history of the Islamic Revolution testifies to the vital importance of reliance on domestic capabilities.

Iran's Missile technology has advanced recently as Tehran inaugurated the country's first home-built space center which will serve as a base for the launch of research satellites.

The space center includes a research satellite called Omid (Hope), an underground control station and space launchpad.

Iranian state television said Monday that the recently launched research rocket has reached an orbit of 200-250 km (125-155 miles) above the earth and has successfully transmitted scientific data back to the country.
