Iran MPs Urge Danish, Dutch Ties Revision

18/02/2008 Iranian MPs on Monday urged President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to revise diplomatic and economic ties with Denmark and the Netherlands amid controversies in both states over "insults" against Islam. The reappearance in the Danish media of a controversial cartoon of the prophet Mohammed has again inflamed sentiments in the Islamic world, while a Dutch MP is preparing to air an anti-Islam film on television.
"Recently some Dutch and Danish media, influenced by usurping Zionists, have distorted and insulted Islamic sanctities," said a statement read out in parliament on behalf of MPs which was broadcast on state radio. "We, the representatives of the Iranian people, condemn this evil act and urge the president to confront such insults and seriously reconsider political and economic ties with these countries," it said.
Dutch far-right deputy Geert Wilders has said his controversial anti-Islam film "Fitna" (Ordeal), which accuses the Koran of inciting people to murder, will be aired in the Netherlands in March. Danish newspapers earlier this month reprinted a cartoon caricaturing the prophet Mohammed which was one of a series of 12 cartoons first published in September 2005 that sparked protests in Muslim states in early 2006.
Both Denmark and the Netherlands have moderate trade ties with Iran, particularly in the areas of dairy products, agriculture, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
