British Judge Questions Halt to Arms Fraud Inquiry

LONDON — A British High Court judge raised new questions Thursday about why the government ordered the Serious Fraud Office to stop investigating claims of corruption related to a 1990s arms deal with Saudi Arabia that was brokered by BAE Systems, the biggest British weapons maker.
The office abruptly canceled its inquiry last year after Tony Blair, the prime minister at the time, said the investigation would threaten thousands of British jobs and affect diplomatic and intelligence ties with Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Blair said an investigation would not “have led anywhere, except to the complete wreckage of a vital strategic relationship for our country.” BAE has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
At a judicial review Thursday, the Campaign Against Arms Trade and the Corner House, a social justice advocacy group, said the government acted unlawfully in December 2006 when it told the fraud office to stop looking into allegations that BAE paid bribes to Saudi Arabian officials in exchange for arms deals.
Dinah Rose, a lawyer representing the two groups, said new documents showed that BAE Systems wrote to the attorney general confidentially, urging him to halt the investigation for commercial and diplomatic reasons.
The high court judge, Justice Alan Moses, said the government should have sought other ways to minimize risks to diplomatic ties or national security.
“What really puzzles me is why weren’t the Saudis told, ‘Hang on, this is just an investigation, and there may not even be any evidence?’ ” he said.
Justice Moses said he saw no evidence so far that the government did anything but “just roll over” by dropping the inquiry.
Lawyers representing the government will present their case on Friday. Watchdog groups and lawmakers have urged the government to restart the investigation.
British news media reported last year that more than $2 billion ended up in bank accounts in Washington controlled by Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia and that the BAE payments were linked to an arms deal negotiated in 1985 and then worth £43 billion (about $85 billion). Prince Bandar has denied accepting “improper secret commissions.”

This, of course, also creates the fantasy that the state is our protector, and that in order to protect us, we must sacrifice even more rights and freedoms for security.
The use of scapegoats, in this case the use of naïve, oftentimes incompetent, illiterate, indigent and sometimes even mentally deficient groups of Arab or Muslim men, usually with no political power and no financial resources, is part of a formula of fear designed inside the rubble of the Twin Towers that has been used to terrorize the American people into submitting to a fascist, despotic state. With every persecution of Arab and Muslim groups, charged with planning terrorist activity, usually with little or no proof, usually later found innocent by a court of law, the state further cements the fiction of fear and the illusion of perpetual insecurity in the citizenry. Propaganda makes bogeymen of scapegoats and scapegoats make obedient cowards of us all.
Of course every new persecution is met by a thunderous manifestation of corporate media coverage, bombarding the airwaves with the fictions and illusions of the charade that is the war on terror. There are enemies in our midst, we are told, dreaded bogeymen intent on killing us, trying to shoot up a mall, or blow up a building, or murder our children. Yet, as usually happens, when the alleged plot is discovered for the lie that it is, when the state is forced to drop charges, when a court of law throws out the case, when the innocent’s voice is validated and the condemned are once again free, there is not one camera or reporter or journalist ready or willing to bombard us with the truth. The blitzkrieg of guilt is suddenly replaced with the utter silence of innocence.
The damage, however, has already been done, for in the eyes of tens of millions the parade of fictions and the presumption of guilt that has so readily been beamed by the corporate media have already established the fear and insecurity that America is under siege by the barbarian horde and its evil religion. The illusion has thus been established, the excuse to erode yet more liberties has been successful, and the scapegoat has again been made the object of growing hatred. The people have again been manipulated, conditioned to hate the very idea of a Muslim or an Arab. The enemy has again been vilified, dehumanized and ostracized, the very term “Muslim” becoming denigrated, its practitioners and believers made to wear an invisible crescent moon on their breasts, becoming in many eyes unwelcome pariahs in the land of immigrants and the home of freedom.

Ik snap dat je mee moet kunnen lullen met je quasi-intellectuele vriendjes die ja van je kerk opgedrongen krijgt,
Het Nederlandse nieuws volg ik al jaren niet meer omdat Nederland een aantal jaren achter loopt op de rest van de wereld (met name de VS).
Voor het buitenlandse nieuws ga ik dusal helemaal geen Nederlandse kranten lezen; en zeker niet die quasi-intellectuele kranten.

Het Nederlandse nieuws volg ik al jaren niet meer omdat Nederland een aantal jaren achter loopt op de rest van de wereld (met name de VS).
Voor het buitenlandse nieuws ga ik dusal helemaal geen Nederlandse kranten lezen; en zeker niet die quasi-intellectuele kranten.
Samenvattend: je komt hier vertellen dat er over iets niet door de Nederlandse nieuwsmedia bericht wordt, om vervolgens, nadat het tegendeel is bewezen aan te geven dat je de Nederlandse nieuwsmedia niet volgt.
En dit alles inclusief wat kinderachtig geneuzel over quasi-inelectualisme en de kerk ....

Als je kromme prietpraat op een openbaar forum plaatst, moet je niet verbaasd staan als er iemand je onuitgenodigd op de kromheid wijst. Als je daar niet tegen kunt dan raad ik je aan je op de wc op te sluiten en binnensmonds te mompelen.
