US power outage becomes life-threatening
Sun, 14 Dec 2008 08:55:46 GMT
Seven US states have declared states of emergency due to the aftereffects of a recent winter storm.
Nearly 800,000 people in northeast US suffer from sub-zero temperatures due to a continued power outage brought about by a winter storm.
"A 49-year-old Danville man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after turning on his generator when his power went out in his camper," New Hampshire officials said.
Although the blackout has reached Pennsylvania, such areas as New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York were most devastated. Cars have also been damaged by broken ice-covered trees.
New Hampshire and Massachusetts declared states of emergency, allowing National Guard troops to be mobilized to help communities with recovery efforts.
People in northern New England suffered from freezing temperatures Friday night and early Saturday; many residents had to leave their homes and go to shelters.
New Hampshire Governor John Lynch said that overnight plans should be made to ease the problems of residents who have no electricity.
"I think there were a lot of people who decided to just stick it out and stay home last night hoping that power would be restored today, but I think people have to assume that power will not come back today and seek shelter," Lynch said.
It will reportedly take days to restore utility services to the affected areas.
