Stephen Wolfram, directeur van Wolfram Research, onthult in mei een kennismachine die antwoorden op feitelijke vragen berekent. De wetenschapper heeft er, samen met zijn team, jarenlang in het geheim aan gewerkt.
Stephen WolframDe 49-jarige wis- en natuurkundige Stephen Wolfram zegt dat zijn bedrijf na lang onderzoek een methode heeft ontwikkeld om allerhande kennis op een eenduidige manier te kunnen coderen en uit te breiden. Bovendien kunnen gegevens worden teruggevonden aan de hand van vragen die in natuurlijke taal worden gesteld. De kennismachine zou onder andere historische, geografische en economische vragen kunnen beantwoorden, maar ook informatie over bijvoorbeeld koken kunnen verstrekken.
Wolfram benadrukt dat het nieuwe product geen zoekmachine is: antwoorden worden niet opgezocht maar berekend. De wetenschapper denkt dat Wolfram Alpha voor een wetenschappelijke doorbraak zal zorgen, maar wilde nog niets prijsgeven over de methodiek achter de kennismachine. Wolfram Research publiceerde al eerder het bekende wiskundepakket Mathematica.
Wolfram Alpha-logo Nova Spivack, de ceo van Radar Networks - een bedrijf dat technologie voor het zogeheten semantische web ontwikkelt - mocht een paar uur met Wolfram Alpha spelen. Spivack schrijft dat de nieuwe engine wel eens net zo belangrijk voor het internet kan worden als Google, maar benadrukt dat het niet om een concurrent gaat: de software is niet geschikt voor zaken als het zoeken naar forumposts of de ideale vakantiebestemming. Wel denkt Spivack dat Google geïnteresseerd zal zijn in de traffic die de kennismachine zou kunnen genereren, en een overname mag volgens hem nu al niet worden uitgesloten. Overigens is Google al in staat om antwoord te geven op sommige eenvoudige vragen, bijvoorbeeld over de tijd, het weer of aandelenkoersen.
