Turkish security forces have detained three military officers as part of an investigation into the coup plot code named “Balyoz” (Sledgehammer), which sought to overthrow the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey.

The arrests were made on Wednesday and the detainees will stand trial in Istanbul's Besiktas court house, the Zaman daily reported Thursday.

According to a report published by the liberal Taraf daily on Wednesday, the Balyoz coup plan was drawn up in 2003, shortly after AKP assumed power. The masterminds behind the plan were retired Generals, Cetin Dogan, the then commander of the Turkish army, former Air Force Commander Ibrahim Firtina, and Ergin Saygun,.

The plan was arranged at a military meeting attended by 162 active army personnel, including 29 generals.

According to the Balyoz plan, the military would incite mayhem in the society through organized acts of violence, including bombing assaults on the Fatih and Beyazit mosques in Turkey's largest city, Istanbul.

The bombings were code-named "Carsaf" (Black Chador) and "Sakal" (Beard) and were supposed to be carried out after worshippers had attended Friday prayers.

In the case of Fatih Mosque, a nine-member gang was supposed to place a remote-control bomb in a shoe cabinet. The bomb would go off only seconds after the completion of the Friday prayers. A number of provocateurs would add to hectic ambiance inside the mosque.

At Beyazit Mosque, a similar bomb would be placed in the garden by a team of gendarmerie officers under the command of a Major identified only by his initials, HO. The bomb would be detonated around 10 minutes before the call to Friday prayers. This time provocateurs were to call on the public to pour into streets in condemnation of the deadly blast.

The desired result of these rallies was to be an increase in domestic pressure on the AKP government over their failure to ensure people's security, consequently leading to its overthrow from power.
