Moslims geven minder geld aan Pakistan dan Westerlingen

Vanavond staan alle politiek-correcte Hilversumse hoofden tijdens de Nationale Actie in een plechtige Pakistan-plooi. Maar hoeveel doneren de bevriende islamstaten aan hun moslimbroeders in Pakistan? 925 lanceert de 'Pompen voor Pakistan'-index. De conclusie mag duidelijk zijn: christenen zijn vrijgeviger dan islamieten.

Tja, zo'n girootje naar 555 kan er natuurlijk even bij inschieten tussen het bommen leggen, moskeeën bouwen en sharia doorvoeren. Na een maand springvloed blijken Westerse landen aanzienlijk meer bij te dragen aan de nood van vijftien miljoen natte pakken in Pakistan dan de bevriende naties in de regio.

Tussenstand
Van de ruim $643 mijoen aan binnengekomen giften komt $155 miljoen van de VS, $65 miljoen uit Engeland en propt de Europese Commissie ook nog eens $54 miljoen in het potje.

Het schuldarme en olierijke Saoedi-Arabië stort een respectabele $74,5 miljoen, maar de emir van Koeweit draagt niet meer dan $5 miljoen aan de collecte bij. Andere moslimbroederstaten laten het bij giften in natura, lees medicijnen over de datum en overtollige medische apparatuur.

925's 'Pompen voor Pakistan'-index
Om te zien wat de donaties van de verschillende moslimlanden nu precies betekenen, is hier de 'Pompen voor Pakistan'-index. In onderstaande tabel leest u - naast de toegezegde bedragen - de hoeveelheid oliedollars die de bijbehorende naties dagelijks uit de grond slurpen.

Via een ingewikkelde wiskundige formule is bovendien berekend met hoeveel minuten aan oliepompen sinds het uitbreken van de ramp deze hulp per land overeenkomt.

Vier minuten
Los van het totale ontbreken van olierijke broederlanden als Algerije, Irak en Jemen, mag duidelijk zijn dat de $74.45 miljoen van Saudi-Arabië bij nader inzien niet zo heel indrukwekkend is. Dat ze in de vier weken na de ramp nog geen tweeënhalf uur van hun pompcapaciteit aan hulp hebben besteed, is niks om over naar huis te schrijven.

Om nog maar te zwijgen over de totale ver-van-mijn-spijkerbedshow die lijkt te heersen in buurland Iran met hun whopping vier minuten. Zij steken hun geld liever in het ontwikkelen van kernenergie kernwapens, iets dat Pakistan tot nu toe ook prioriteit gaf boven het bouwen van dijken.

Ramadan
Helemaal pijnlijk worden de bovenstaande cijfers wanneer je bedenkt dat we op de dit moment midden in de ramadan zitten. In deze periode van kuisheid en naastenliefde is de zogenaamde zakat (het geven aan hulpbehoevenden, een van de vijf zuilen van de islam) extra belangrijk.

En al weet de rechtgeaarde moslim natuurlijk best dat voor deze zakat hetzelfde opgaat als voor onze Moederdag (en hij dus eigenlijk iedere dag zou moeten gelden), dat men nog niet eens de indruk probeert te wekken bij de problematiek betrokken te zijn is op z'n minst opvallend.

Give salaam a chance
Of we het erg moeten vinden dat de moslims niet massaal opstaan, en of we eigenlijk wel in een wereld zouden moeten willen leven waarin humanitaire hulp alleen wordt uitgedeeld door degenen die toevallig hetzelfde opperwezen aanbidden, is weer een heel andere discussie.

Nood is nood, een mens is mens, en ook al verklaarde onze eigen minister Van Middelkoop nog niet zo lang geleden dat hij ook liever nette christelijke kindjes in Afrika redde, dan losgeslagen heidenen in de Oost, het lijkt er bijna op dat broederstaat Pakistan nauwelijks de gemoederen bezighoudt.

En al zwemmen ook niet alle moslimslanden in de oliedollars, een blijk van goede wil is toch niet zo heel veel gevraagd. Zo moeilijk moet het bijvoorbeeld niet zijn om een sponsorloop rond de ka'aba, een all-you-can-eat iftar voor het goede doel of Miss Wet Burqa-contest te organiseren.

Geen discussie
Voorlopig blijft het netste jongetje van de klas het land waarvan je zou verwachten dat ze voorlopig liever niets met de moslimwereld van doen hebben. Zonder aarzeling stuurden de VS daags na de overstroming hun chinooks naar het rampgebied om persoonlijk de eerste hulppakketten bij de slachtoffers af te leveren (zou Obama dan toch...).

Zo kritisch als de geluiden in the States ook mogen zijn, bij deze humanitaire ramp was discussie overbodig. Hulp werd geboden, en maar liefst $155 miljoen is inmiddels toegezegd. En het mooist is daarbij bovendien dat er totaal geen strings attached zijn. Mocht het water straks weer zijn gezakt en de Pakistani besluiten een moskee op de rampplek te gaan bouwen, dan mogen ze lekker hun gang gaan.

Pakistan floods: Saudi Arabia pledges $100mOil-rich country overtakes US as main aid donor as second wave of flooding hits new areas in southern provinces

Saudi Arabia has overtaken the US as the largest donor to Pakistan's flood relief effort, following criticism that Muslim countries were not giving enough for victims of the disaster.

The oil-rich country is to give $105m (£67m) in aid, according to Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority, though just $5m of this is in cash, with the rest in the form of relief goods. The Saudi public has separately raised $19m.

The pledge was made as a spurt of other money came in for the still sluggish fundraising drive. The European Union increased its contribution, by €30m (£24m) to €70m, and the UN said that its appeal was now half funded.

The flooding is still inundating new areas, with two or more weeks of the monsoon season yet to run, while the threat of disease means the crisis could grow much worse.

A second wave of flooding has hit new areas of the southern provinces of Sindh and Balochistan.

In Britain, the Disasters Emergency Committee expressed "grave concern" today that cholera cases had been confirmed.

Until now, the US had been the leading contributor towards relief efforts, and its generosity was seen as a way for Washington to improve its image in Pakistan. Muslim countries, meanwhile, had been slow to give and may have been stung into donating by criticism in the Pakistani media.

Saudi Arabia has strong links with Pakistan, with many Saudi charities promoting its brand of conservative Islam in the country for decades, including the funding of religious seminaries often accused of promoting Islamist extremism.

The US is giving $76m in cash but says its contribution is worth $87m, including aid-in-kind. In addition, the US has 19 helicopters operating in northern Pakistan, ferrying supplies and people.

Last week, Richard Holbrooke, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, said: "The people of Pakistan will see that when the crisis hits, it's not the Chinese. It's not the Iranians. It's not other countries. It's not the EU It's the US that always leads."

In total $466m has been pledged in aid so far, including contributions to the UN and non-governmental organisations. An appeal by the Pakistani prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gillani, attracted less than £1m at the start of this week.

TodayThe cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan launched a challenge to the government by starting his own flood appeal, saying the Pakistani public did not trust giving to the state.

Britain is giving £31m, said the international development secretary, Andrew Mitchell, who was today visiting flood-hit areas in Pakistan on .

"The people of Pakistan need help and they need it now," said Mitchell. "It is difficult to comprehend the extent of this tragedy. Nothing could have prepared me for the horrific scenes of destruction and devastation I have seen today. But the worst could still be to come."

According to Oxfam, within the first 10 days after the Haitian earthquake, donors had committed $742m and pledged a further $920m. For Pakistan, the figures over the same period were $45m and $91m.

The money already donated is for the immediate relief of the 20 million people affected by flooding.

A vast area slicing through the middle of Pakistan, running from the mountains of the north to the desert areas of Sindh province in the south, has been affected. It is estimated that billions of dollars will be needed to rehabilitate the ravaged areas, rebuilding infrastructure and the economy.

The UN appealed last week for $460m to cover the first 90 days of the emergency. It said today that half the target had been reached, but warned that it was able to reach less than a quarter of the 6 million people in urgent need for food and clean drinking water. The cost of providing clean water alone is about $2m a day.
