Er zijn natuurlijk genoeg werkelijkheidgebieden te noemen waarin math niet werkt.Toegepaste wiskunde gaat over modellen. De volgende vraag blijft altijd in hoeverre het model overeenkomt met de werkelijkheid.En kan dus misbruikt worden.
De Laffer-curve (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laffercurve) bijvoorbeeld : het neocon-stokpaardje over belasting-percentages en -opbrengsten. Er wordt een keurige kromme getekend tussen 0% en 100% . De 0% stelling is waar, de 100%-stelling is waar. Alles daartussenin wordt met een keurige kromme getekend maar kan net zo goed een alle kanten uitschietende kromme zijn met meerdere maxima.

Laffer later pointed out that the concept was not original, noting similar ideas in the writings of both 14th century North African polymath Ibn Khaldun (who discussed the idea in his 1377 Muqaddimah) and John Maynard Keynes.[1] Numerous other historical precedents also exist.
