'Dutch firms harmed by Iran sanctions'
Tue Sep 20, 2011 3:43PM GMT
The Dutch export organization Fenedex says companies in the Netherlands have been affected by the US-engineered sanctions banning trade with Iran.
In a report published by the Dutch paper Het Financieele Dagblad, Fenedex admitted that currently over 65 Dutch companies have trade ties with the Islamic Republic.
The report said the Dutch companies have had to either restrain or sever their commercial relations with Iranian firms over the past few years as a result of the Western sanctions.
Most of the companies in question operate gas and oil sectors, machinery and food industry, according to Fenedex.
The report further referred to the complaints made by many firms and businessmen who believe the sanctions and restrictions imposed by the US and its allies against Iran have only complicated trade with the Islamic Republic and reduced their revenues.
The Netherlands' prominent private trading group SHV, which launched and complemented the gas combustion system for Iranian automaker Saipa, admits that the Iranians have circumvented the sanctions, the report added.
Iranians are now producing the gas-burning systems domestically and the Iranian carmaker does not bear strong ties with the Dutch firm anymore, the document cited SHV as saying.
Fenedex also mentioned Marilux Holland, which supplied steel for construction companies, claiming the pressure has forced the family-run company to sell off its assets to Iranians. The company, with 600 personnel and an annual money turnover of around one billion US dollars has lost its income from Iran.
According to the report, many Dutch firms are increasingly finding it more difficult to maintain their trade ties with Iran due to sanctions barring exports of goods with dual military and civilian use to the Islamic Republic.
