Rosenthal dreigt met intrekken steun aan Egypte
(Novum) - Als het geweld tegen Palestijnen in Israel niet stopt, dan zal Nederland de steun aan Israel terugschroeven. Dat heeft minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Uri Rosenthal (VVD) dinsdag gezegd.
De Israelische autoriteiten moeten niet alleen maar zeggen dat ze godsdienstvrijheid toestaan, maar religieuze minderheden ook echt beschermen. "Als onze steun er niet toe leidt dat Israel dit doet, is die steun niet meer op zijn plaats", zei Rosenthal in de wandelgangen van de Tweede Kamer.
Nederland geeft steun om Israel te helpen bij de overgang naar een democratie. Daar hoort bij dat de autoriteiten ervoor zorgen dat de Moslims veilig zijn. "Dat is waar het nu om gaat. Als Israel dat niet aankan, heeft Israel een probleem", zei Rosenthal.
Rosenthal moest eerder dinsdag in het mondelinge vragenuur tekst en uitleg geven naar aanleiding van de tegen Moslims gerichte rellen waarbij dit weekeinde zeker 26 mensen om het leven kwamen. Daar kreeg hij kritiek omdat hij niet scherp genoeg zou hebben gereageerd. De PVV stelde dat Rosenthal de Israelische ambassadeur moet uitzetten en de Nederlandse ambassadeur uit Israel moet terugroepen.
Woensdag spreekt de Tweede Kamer opnieuw met Rosenthal over de situatie van de Moslims in Israel. Later deze maand brengt Rosenthal een bezoek aan Israel.

The incident took place on Tuesday in the Palestinian village of Nahalin, which is located southwest of Bethlehem, AFP reported.
Osama Shakarna, the head of the Nahalin council, said two settlers burned lands in Matabekh area, northwest of the village.
Israeli officials made no immediate comment on the incident, which occurred one day after the beginning of the olive harvest.
Meanwhile, the UN human rights office called on Israel on Tuesday to stop settlers from attacking Palestinians.
Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN high commissioner for human rights, criticized the uprooting of 200 olive trees in the West Bank village of Qusra on October 6, and the fatal shooting of a Palestinian by an Israeli soldier and the beating of two Palestinian minors detained by Israeli troops in the village in September.
Colville said the rise in attacks since the beginning of September was “emblematic of the phenomenon of settler violence throughout the West Bank.”
Olive cultivation and its related businesses in the occupied Palestinian territories, especially the Gaza Strip, have been severely damaged due to Israeli attacks.
Hundreds of olive trees have been uprooted and mosques have been attacked by the Israeli settlers over the past few weeks.
Israeli soldiers have several times clashed with the settlers, who describe their actions as the “price tag” for the “unfair” Israeli policies.

Israeli forces razed the mosque in Khirbet Yarza, a Bedouin community near Tubas in the Jordan Valley, Tuesday morning, the Palestine Tribune reported.
More than five Israeli troops demolished the 60-square-meter mosque by a military bulldozer, head of Wadi Al-Maleh village council said.
While Israeli forces claim the mosque was built illegally, Palestinian activists insist that the Jordan Valley is facing an Israeli ethnic cleansing campaign in which its residents are being forced to abandon the region.
This is the third mosque demolished by forces of the Israeli regime in the past seven months.
The demolition comes amid a recent wave of regular attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their properties.
Israel has illegally engaged in the construction of Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories in the occupied West Bank, despite the international community's condemnation of the measure.

Netanyahu told ministers from his rightwing Likud party on Sunday that he would order Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman to set up a task force to explore ways of legalizing such unlawful construction, AFP reported on Tuesday, citing an Israeli paper.
The decision to set up a task force was taken after heavy pressure from the settler lobby and rightwing activists, following the demolition in early September of three structures in the Migron outpost near the West Bank city of Ramallah, the report said.
The decision to demolish Migron and other outposts built on private Palestinian land was taken in February when Netanyahu and three other ministers met with Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein.
At the meeting, they agreed to raze all such outposts while at the same time working to legalize any illegal construction in both settlements and outposts built on state land, added the report.
The international community considers all settlements built in the occupied West Bank to be illegal.
The latest revelation comes after a UN committee in August strongly condemned Israel's settlement activities in the occupied West Bank.
In an August 20 communiqué, the Bureau of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People expressed concern over Israel's approval of 5,200 new settlement units in occupied East al-Quds (Jerusalem) in August alone.

The incident took place in the city of Ramallah on Tuesday, where about 60 Palestinian activists began an open-ended hunger strike one day earlier to show solidarity with Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails who are on hunger strike.
Protesters expressed anger about the conditions under which Palestinians are held at Ofer Prison and other Israeli detention facilities.
Muhannad Abu-Gosh, one of the strike organizers, said on Monday that the move was to express support for the prisoners and “raise their morale and to raise awareness of the Palestinian political detainees.”
Activists have frequently accused Israel of rights abuse in Ofer Prison, where they say “Palestinian children” are also being held.
Palestinian and Arab prisoners in 25 Israeli prisons went on hunger strike on September 27 in protest against poor living conditions in Israeli prisons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had announced in June that he intends to make conditions tougher for Palestinian prisoners.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, about 6,000 Palestinian detainees are currently held in Israeli prisons.

Israël moet meer doen om aanvallen van joodse kolonisten op Palestijnse burgers op de Westelijke Jordaanoever tegen te gaan. Dat heeft Rupert Colville, de woordvoerder van de Hoge Commissaris voor de Mensenrechten van de Verenigde Naties, dinsdag gezegd. Volgens Colville treedt het Israëlische leger wel hard op tegen misstanden begaan door Palestijnen.
Israëlische diplomaten zeiden verrast te zijn door de verklaring van Colville, die volgens hen zonder waarschuwing naar buiten is gebracht. Volgens de diplomaten repte Colville ook niet over geweld tegen joodse kolonisten. "Alles kan worden gerapporteerd aan de Israëlische autoriteiten en waar nodig worden wettelijke procedures ingesteld", zei Walid Abu-Haya, een Israëlische diplomaat belast met mensenrechtenkwesties .
Het geweld op de Westoever en in Israël is de laatste weken weer opgelaaid. Honderden olijfbomen werden ontworteld en moskeeën en Arabische begraafplaatsen werden vernield. Extremistische kolonisten, die menen dat het geweld de 'prijs' is voor Israëlisch beleid dat zij als oneerlijk bestempelen, zitten waarschijnlijk achter de aanvallen. De kolonisten hebben ook meermaals Israëlische militairen aangevallen.
Volgens Colville is Israël wettelijk verplicht Palestijnse burgers en bezit te beschermen. "Het lijkt erop dat er ten minste ten dele de kant wordt gekozen van de kolonisten en dat er niet sterk genoeg wordt ingegrepen om Palestijnse burgers te beschermen", zei Colville dinsdag in Genève. Hij haalde de dood van een Palestijn aan die in september in het dorpje Qusra op de Westelijke Jordaanoever werd doodgeschoten door een Israëlische militair, het aftuigen van twee minderjarigen door militairen op dezelfde dag en de ontworteling van tweehonderd olijvenbomen in Qusra in oktober.
In een verklaring zei het Israëlische leger dat het rellen en eenzijdig handelen door individuen niet accepteert. Israëlische militairen zijn verplicht om aanvallen op veiligheidstroepen of Palestijnse burgers door Israëliërs te voorkomen, aldus het leger. Ook Micky Rosenfeld, woordvoerder van de Israëlische politie, zei dat de politie vastbesloten is misdaad te bestrijden, ongeacht de afkomst van de dader.
Een rapport van de VN over de impact van de uitbreiding van Israëlische nederzettingen wordt later deze week verwacht.
