(Reuters) - A shooting during Sunday services at a Sikh temple left at least seven people dead, including a gunman, and at least three critically wounded, police and hospital officials said.

Four people were shot inside the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in suburban Milwaukee and three outside, including a gunman killed by a police officer, said Greenfield Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt.

"This is the best information we have, and this information may change," he told reporters outside the temple.

Smiran Kaleka, the niece of one of the wounded men, said an unknown number of gunmen walked into the kitchen of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek about 10:30 a.m. CDT (11.30 a.m. EDT) and started shooting. She said her mother had told her the shooters were white men.

Nalissa Wienke, a spokeswoman for Froedtert & Medical College Hospital, said three men had been brought in wounded and were in critical condition. One was in the operating room, she said.

The 20-year veteran officer who exchanged fire with the gunman was hit several times, Wentlandt said. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Witnesses said hostages were being held inside the temple but police did not confirm this.

A man who said his father had been wounded in the incident reported that there had been multiple shooters of Caucasian descent, quoting people inside the temple. "It was a very coordinated thing," the man, identified as Amardeep Kaleka, told police.

Police, ambulances and firefighters from Oak Creek and other localities were on the scene at the temple.

Sikh Temple Shooting: An Act of ‘Domestic Terrorism’

(OAK CREEK) — Police in Wisconsin say the FBI will handle the investigation of shootings at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee.

Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards says the case is being treated as a domestic terrorism case and the FBI is better equipped to handle that.

Edwards said during a news conference Sunday afternoon that seven people are dead, including the suspected shooter, and three people are wounded. One of those is a police officer shot by the suspect.

The shootings happened about 10:30 a.m. as people were gathering for a service at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, which is just south of Milwaukee.

Multiple news outlets reported that the shooter at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin was Wade Page, 40.

Those news sources said that Page was a man who served in the U.S. Army. NBC News reported Page was the leader of a neo-Nazi music band, "End Apathy."

"He didn't seem like he was a neo-Nazi...he seemed like a pretty normal guy," said Peter Hoyt, who said he was a neighbor of Page's to TODAY'S TMJ4's Jermont Terry on "Live at Daybreak."

ABC News, of which Newsradio 620 WTMJ is an affiliate, said Page acted as a specialist in psychological operations. The Army discharged him in 1998. He reportedly served our country in Iraq.

TODAY'S TMJ4's Steve Chamraz also reports that Page was demoted while in the Army.

Hoyt also said Page, who served American in the Iraqi conflict, moved to his Cudahy home after a breakup with his girlfriend. He called Page "a normal guy who had a bad breakup."
