What Quran & Hadith says about ‘Lailatul Qadar’

Surely We revealed it on the grand night. And what will make you comprehend what the grand night is? The grand night is better than a thousand months. The angels and Gabriel descend in it by the permission of their Lord for every affair, Peace! it is till the break of the morning.

Lailatul Qadr in the Last Seven Nights of Ramazan

[Sahih Bukhari : Volume 3, Book 32 "Taraweeh", Number 232]

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (Radi Allah Anhu) : Some men amongst the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) were shown in their dreams that the night of Qadr was in the last seven nights of Ramazan. Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) said, “It seems that all your dreams agree that (the Night of Qadr) is in the last seven nights, and whoever wants to search for it should search in the last seven nights of Ramazan.”

[Sahih Bukhari : Volume 3, Book 32 "Taraweeh", Number 233]

Narrated Abu Salama (Radi Allah Anhu) : I asked Abu Sa’id (Radi Allah Anhu) about the Night of Qadr and he said, “We practised Itikaf in the middle third month of Ramazan with Prophet Muhammad (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ). In the morning of the 20th of Ramazan, the Prophet Muhammad (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) came to and addressed us and said, ” I was informed of the date of the Night of Qadr but I was caused to forget it, or I forget, so search it in the last ten nights of month of Ramazan.”

Search Lailatul Qadr in the Odd Nights of Last Ten Nights of Ramazan

[Sahih Bukhari : Volume 3, Book 32 "Taraweeh", Number 238]

Narrated ‘Ibn Abbas (Radi Allah Anha): The Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) said:
“Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramazan on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain out of the last ten nights of the Ramazan.”

[Sahih Bukhari : Volume 3, Book 32 "Taraweeh", Number 239]

Narrated ‘Ibn Abbas (Radi Allah Anha) in this quotation: Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) said:
“The Night of Qadr is in the last ten nights of the month of Ramazan either on the first nine or in the last (remaining) seven nights of Ramazan.”

[Sahih Bukhari : Volume 3, Book 32 "Taraweeh", Number 241]

Narrated ‘Aisha (Radi Allah Anhu) : With the start of the last ten days of Ramazan, Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) used to tighten his waist-belt (i.e. hard work) and used to offer Salat (Prayer) all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the Salat (prayers).

[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 "Kitab Al-Sawm", Number 2632]

‘A’isha (Radi Allah Anhu) Allah’s Messenger (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) as saying:

“Look for (and in the words of Waki, seek) Lailat-ul-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.”

[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 "Kitab Al-Sawm", Number 2633]

Zirr b. Habaish (Radi Allah Anhu) reported Ubayy b. Ka’b (Radi Allah Anhu) took oath (without making any exception, i. e. without saying Innsha Allah) that it was the twenty-seventh night. I said to him: Abu Mundhir, on what ground do you say that? Thereupon he said: By the indication or by the sign which the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) gave us, and that is that on that day (the sun) would rise without having any ray in it.

[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 "Kitab Al-Sawm", Number 2634]

Zirr b. Hubaish (Radi Allah Anhu) reported that Ubayy b. Ka’b (Radi Allah Anhu) said about Lailat-ul-Qadr: By Allah, I know well about it. Shu’ba said: To the best of my knowledge it was the twenty-seventh night for which the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) commanded us to stand for prayer. Shu’ba doubted these words: That it was the night for which the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) commanded us to stand for prayer. And (he further) said: This was narrated to me by a friend of mine from him (the Holy Prophet).

[Sahih Muslim : Book 6 "Kitab Al-Sawm", Number 2635]

Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) reported: We were talking about Lailat-ul-Qadr in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) and he said: “He who amongst you remembers (the night) when the moon arose and it was like a piece of plate (at the fag end of the month in a state of waning).”

My Lord! grant me that I should be grateful for Thy favor which Thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I should do good such as Thou art pleased with, and make me enter, by Thy mercy, into Thy servants, the good ones.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: I have prepared for My pious servants which the eye has seen not, and the ear has heard not and no human heart has ever perceived such bounties leaving aside those about which Allah has informed you. He then recited:" No soul knows what comfort has been hidden for thein".

Sahl b. Sa'd as-Sa'idi reported: I was in the company of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) that he gave a description of Paradise and then Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) concluded with these words: There would be bounties which the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard and no human heart has ever perceived them. He then recited this verse:" They forsake (their) beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and in hope, and spend out of what We have given them. So no soul knows what refreshment of the eyes is hidden for them: a reward for what they did" (xxxii. 16-17)

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said that Allah would say to the inmates of Paradise: O, Dwellers of Paradise, and they would say in response: At thy service and pleasure, our Lord, the good is in Thy Hand. He (the Lord) would say: Are you well pleased now? They would say: Why should we not be pleased, O Lord, when Thou hast given us what Thou hast not given to any of Thy creatures? He would, however, say: May I not give you (something) even more excellent than that? And they would say: 0 Lord, what thing can be more excellent than this? And He would say: I shall cause My pleasure to alight upon you and I shall never be afterwards annoyed with you.

Of zie jij het wel staan ?

PS @ Samir : schitterende opnames !

Ik kan me voorstellen dat kunstschilders stonden te knipperen met hun ogen toen de fotografie zich ontwikkelde.. Nu maken ze zelfs gebruik van foto's in hun kunstwerken :)

Allah says: “Behold, there are two receiving (angels) appointed to him, one seated on the right and the other on the left. He utters not a word but there is with him an observer ready (to note it down).” [Sûrah Qâf: 17-18]

The word raqîb means “observer”.

The word `atîd means “ready” or “prepared”.

The angels are being described in these verses. They are not being named. They are first described as “two receivers” (mutalaqqiyân)

Then the verses describe the angels with the descriptions “observer” (raqîb) and “ready” (`atîd). These adjectives apply to each and every guardian angel. They are not proper names.

It is certainly not the case that the one of the right is an “observer” while the one on the left is “ready”. All of the guardian angels are observant and ready.

We do not know of any authentic reference giving specific, proper names to these angels.

And Allah knows best.

"Every human being has two angels who accompany him and record his deeds. The generous one records his good deeds, and is so named because each good deed is rewarded ten times over or even more. The recorder of evil deeds is called simply the Recorder , because each evil deed counts only one-fold.

"And, indeed, there are over you scribes, generous and recording. They know what you do." [82 (Al-Infitaar), 10-12]

These angels record our deeds, words and thoughts.

"He utters not any word except that there is with him an observer, ready." [50 (Qaaf), 18]

The system for recording of deeds is detailed in the Hadith Qudsi, narrated by `Abdullah ibn `Abbas (ra) : The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said, regarding that which he narrates from his Lord, the Possessor of Blessings, the Exalted, "Indeed, Allah has defined the good and the evil deeds, and then explained them. So, whoever had the thought to do a good deed, but did not do it, Allah writes it for him as a complete good deed, while if he [actually] did it, Allah writes it for him as ten good deeds, [or] up to seven hundred fold, [or] up to [even] many times [more over]. And, if he had the thought to do an evil deed, but [dispelled the thought and] did not do it, Allah writes it for him as a complete good deed, while if he [entertained the thought and] acted on it, Allah writes it as a single evil deed." (Related by Bukhari and Muslim)"

Ameen!
