H7N9 heeft mensen besmet zonder dat er contact was met pluimvee. Dat suggereert op zijn minst de mogelijkheid mens tot mens besmetting. Maar dat is nog niet aangetoond. Besmet pluimvee wordt niet erg ziek dus het wordt te laat opgemerkt.
Volgens de WHO (nu.nl) is het voor mensen een nogal dodelijke variant. Ik vind dit best een beetje zorgelijk.

Het nieuwe vogelgriepvirus, dat in China aan inmiddels 22 mensen het leven heeft gekost, is ''een van de meest dodelijke'' in zijn soort.

Dat concludeert de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) na onderzoek. Het virus is gevaarlijker dan de ''oude'' vogelgriep waaraan sinds 2003 wereldwijd honderden mensen zijn overleden.

Het is nog niet duidelijk geworden hoe de mensen zijn geïnfecteerd. Er zijn in China 108 mensen met het nieuwe H7N9 virus besmet geraakt. Er zijn nog geen aanwijzingen dat het virus van mens-op-mens kan overgaan.

Een team van experts van de WHO en de Chinese regering deed vijf dagen onderzoek in China. Ze kwamen niet verder met de vraag of het virus van mens-op-mens kan overgaan. ''Als we naar griepvirussen kijken, dan is dit virus ongewoon gevaarlijk voor mensen'', aldus een van de onderzoekers.

Taiwan meldde woensdag de eerste besmetting buiten China met het nieuwe vogelgriepvirus. Het gaat om een 53-jarige man die net was teruggekeerd uit China.

TAIPEI--Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control Wednesday reported its first case of human infection of the deadly H7N9 bird flu strain on the island, possibly making it also the first confirmed case outside of mainland China.

In a statement, the CDC said a 53-year-old Taiwanese man fell ill after returning from a work trip to Suzhou in China on April 9. He became feverish and experienced shortness of breath shortly after his trip. He tested positive for the virus on April 24. The man is currently receiving treatment while being quarantined at an intensive care unit.

According to the patient, he didn't come in contact with any live poultry during his time in China, the CDC added.

According to the latest information available from the WHO website, there has been a total of 108 cases of confirmed human infection, including 22 deaths, all in China. Flu experts said they are concerned about the new virus because it exhibits signs of being more readily able to infect humans from ailing birds than another form of avian flu known as H5N1, which has been infecting people off and on for more than a decade.

"To our best knowledge, the man has come in contact with 139 people and so far none has exhibited any symptoms of the virus," CDC Director-General Chang Feng-yee said.

(Reuters) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Sunday it appeared likely that the novel coronavirus, which has killed 18 people in the Middle East and Europe, could be passed between people in close contact.

The coronavirus is from the same viral family that triggered the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that swept the world after starting in Asia in late 2003 and killed 775 people.

WHO Assistant Director-General Keiji Fukuda, speaking after a visit to Saudi Arabia, the site of the largest cluster of infections, told reporters in Riyadh there was no evidence so far that the virus was able to sustain "generalised transmission in communities".

But he added: "Of most concern ... is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries ... increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact, this novel coronavirus can transmit from person to person."

A public health expert, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter, said "close contact" in this context meant being in the same small, enclosed space with an infected person for a prolonged period of time.
