A racist killer was feared to be on the loose in Birmingham last night after a 75-year-old Muslim grandfather was murdered on his way home from evening prayer.

Mohammed Saleem, who walked with a stick, was knifed four times in the back so viciously on Monday night that the wounds penetrated his chest.
The father-of seven, who had no “defensive wounds”, was not robbed and his family have said there was no reason they knew why anyone would want to hurt him.
Yesterday, West Midlands Police launched a public appeal to trace a suspect caught on CCTV near the scene of the attack, which detectives believe could be racially motivated.
Det Supt Mark Payne, the officer in charge of the inquiry, admitted the possibility it was a racist attack was a “significant line of inquiry".
A retired baker with five daughters, two sons and 22 grandchildren, Mr Saleem had lived in Little Green Lane, Small Heath, Birmingham, with his wife, Said Begum, 69, for 40 years.
Mr Payne said the issue of motive was "wide open" but Mr Saleem followed the same route to the mosque, five times a day, and never carried any money.
He added: "To the attacker I say we will find you and we will bring you to justice".
“Anybody capable of stabbing a 75-year-old man in the back three times needs to be in jail and that's where we will put them."
In an emotional family appeal, two of Mr Saleem's daughters Shazia Khan, 45, who lives in London and Nazia Maqsood, 44, urged the attacker to hand themselves in.
Mrs Khan said she believed it was "a pre-meditated brutal attack, pre-planned, intended to kill".
Officers said they want to trace a white man, aged 25 to 32, of medium height and build.
Mr Payne said the man was seen wearing "a distinctive beanie hat with a ribbed or striped pattern", a light-coloured top and dark bottoms.
Police also want to trace a seven-seat people carrier captured on CCTV, driving near the mosque with the two male occupants, both white men in their 30s, who are considered "significant witnesses".

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested over an alleged racist attack on two Muslim women in Edinburgh.
Police said a youth allegedly shouted abuse at the women and tried to remove their headscarves in the Wester Hailes area on Thursday.
Officers had appealed to the public to identify those involved.
The 14-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the incident and a report is to be sent to the procurator fiscal.
Insp Stevie Dolan said: "I would like to thank the local community who responded to our appeal and gave us the information we required to detect this alleged offence.
"It is thanks to the information they provided that we have been able to arrest and charge someone."

A 25-year-old Ukrainian man has appeared in court charged with the "terrorist-related" murder of 82-year-old Mohammed Saleem in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police said that Pavlo Lapshyn has also been charged in relation to explosions at three mosques.
Mohammed Saleem was stabbed as he walked home after prayers from a mosque in Small Heath on 29 April.
Mr Lapshyn was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday.
Mr Lapshyn, who comes from the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk, appeared in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court flanked by three police officers. He was dressed in black and only spoke to confirm his name and date of birth as 12 March 1988.
West Midlands Police charged the postgraduate student with murder on Monday evening. Mr Saleem was stabbed a matter of days after Mr Lapshyn began a work placement in the UK.

In a statement on Monday morning, police confirmed Mr Lapshyn had also been charged in relation to incidents at mosques in Walsall, Tipton and Wolverhampton.
The court heard that Mr Lapshyn was accused of causing explosions on 21 June and 12 July, contrary to Section 2 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.
Mr Lapshyn is further charged under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 with intending to commit acts of terrorism between 24 April and 18 July.
It is alleged that he bought batteries, a lunch bag, clock and green container as part of the construction an explosive device.
It is further alleged that he carried out internet research to identify locations to plant explosive devices and that he visited at least one area in the West Midlands as part of that planning.
He is further accused of buying chemicals online to make an explosive device and of modifying mobile phones to be used as detonators.
Work placement
Detectives from West Midlands Police have flown to Ukraine to continue their investigations into Mr Lapshyn.
The student came to the UK for a work placement with Delcam, a company that specialises in software for manufacturing industry.
Mr Lapshyn was awarded the work placement as part of a project in which international students get the chance to work temporarily at the company.
In 2012, he attended a ceremony at the Kiev residence of the UK's then ambassador, Leigh Turner, in which top students from the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine received prizes as part of the scheme.
'Too little'
Mr Lapshyn is a PhD student at the academy and, according to his teacher and research advisor, Viktor Laskin, is one of the academy's top students.
Mr Laskin told the BBC Ukrainian correspondent Vitaliy Chervonenko that Mr Lapshyn was also deeply interested in computers and technology.
Some Muslim organisations have claimed that the political and police response to the mosque attacks in the West Midlands had been "too little too late", the BBC's Home Affairs correspondent Matt Prodger said.
In response, a Home Office spokesperson said the government was treating recent incidents in the West Midlands "extremely seriously".
"Officials in the Home Office have been in regular contact with West Midlands police and local Muslim leaders to provide support," said the spokesperson.
"The home secretary has spoken personally with Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale and asked to be kept up-to-date with the latest developments.
"The Security Minister James Brokenshire is also visiting Birmingham today to meet those who have been directly affected."

Lapshyn’s account at one of the social networking web-sites was discovered, revealing his vehemently racist beliefs and right-wing terrorist obsessions.
On the 21st of June, when attempts were made to bomb mosques in Walsall, Lapshyn posted a picture and a music track praising Timothy McVeigh, a deceased American terrorist who was responsible for “the Oklahoma City bombing” that killed 168 people.

On his web-site, he also posted a link to the Russian translation of Hunter, a book written, under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald, by American neo-Nazi William Luther Pierce, the founder of the National Alliance. The audio-book of William Piece, The Turner Diaries, which is believed to have inspired Timothy McVeigh, is featured in Lapshyn’s collection of audio files. The cover of The Turner Diaries is also his profile picture. One of his posts gave an account of the National Socialist Underground, a German neo-Nazi terrorist group, the only surviving member of which, Beate Zschäpe, now stands trial in Munich.
His “groups of interest” include the Russian communities “The Slavic Revival” and “The Hammer of National Socialism”.
In June this year, Lapshyn also posted a poem by Nikola Korolyov, the founder of the Russian neo-Nazi “SPAS” organisation. Korolyov is now jailed for life in Russia for right-wing terrorist attacks and murders. Another post in June featured a picture of an electric detonator element. Both these posts, however, were later deleted. Last time Lapshyn visited his web-site was on the 18th of July, the day he was arrested. Perhaps, he deleted those two posts then.
If Lapshyn is indeed the culprit (the investigation is still going on), one of the most important questions is whether he had any intentions to commit the terrorist attacks in England before he went to the country for the training course at Delcam. It is is possible that he did not. He might have been extremely radicalised (and his extremism resulted in the murder of Mohammed Saleem), but the impetus to bomb mosques was most likely been given by the Woolwich terror attack and the subsequent wave of anti-Muslim attacks.

Vreemd dat dit soort daden van tereur de media zoals NOS nooit hebben gehaald. Laatst was er daar in Birmingham een bom bij een moskee tot ontploffing gebracht, ookal niks over gehoord in de media. Maar owee als het moslims waren geweest, dan zou het tot in het treurige zijn uitgemolken...

Ukrainian Pavlo Lapshyn, who admitted murdering a grandfather from Birmingham and planting bombs near mosques in the West Midlands, has been sentenced at the Old Bailey to life in jail.
A judge told him: "You clearly hold extreme white supremacy views that are abhorrent to all right thinking people and have no place whatsoever in our multi-faith and multi-cultural society.
"You were intent on finding a Muslim to murder."
He will serve a minimum of 40 years.
